Old timey for sure. Historic for sure. Nice for a walk through town or to catch some shade under the trees. Ride your bike around the square or walk your pups. Occasional events and music are staged here when they close off the traffic. Food trailers park here on weekends and you can buy a burrito or a drink. Locals gravitate to the park to sit around and mingle. In the heart of town so you have banks, tourist shops, art galleries, coffee shops, the post office, all conveniently close by. Don't miss farmer's market Saturday morning. It's rarely intense, mostly really laid back and sometimes not a soul around, so by west coast standards it needs ambience and a renaissance could take place here like in Santa Fe, but many other tangental aspects of supporting infrastructure and business activity would have to coalesce to make it happen. Socorro seems caught in a hiatus as if in the midst of taking a breath so maybe someday it will catch it's stride once again. But admittedly some folks are really happy that life here has a slower more uneventful pace. The haunting silence of the vast empty spaces and the small towns of the Western States can be one of their most attractive qualities if you can find that peaceful centre within your self. The ancient trees, and I mean awesome old trees, give voice to the fact that the town's people have dedicated their love and care for a century in order to preserve this plaza's park with such a grand shade place and peaceful lawn.
