Giving one star because I was impressed that there was the caliber of art for such a small area. However I won't be returning. My girlfriend is a huge art lover, I am not but I love her and wanted to surprise her. When we entered we were very quiet and polite as usual, we strolled around and I got to learn all the little tidbits of info she knew about art. But noticed we wre being followed. Once we rounded an exit of one exhibit a man with a radio approached from around a corner and told us in an aggressive manner that we weren't allowed to be within 12" of the art, which we weren't ever. We told him "okay" and casually strolled on. We still were followed and again never got close to the art and again were approached in an aggressive manner and at this point it was a struggle to not become upset but because of my girlfriend I didn't. The director of the place I believe either took notice of how frustrated I was becoming or something, because he came over and made sure to chat about some of the cool art and calm the situation down. Overall we felt very judged, I guess because of our...

The Springfield Art Museum is such a cool museum. First off, unlike some other museum's, it's free to get inside and look around at the exhibits.

They change up their exhibits often, and so even if you make it here multiple times a year, you'll always catch a variety of displays and impressive, intriguing artwork. They have a kids area, as well as a book nook, which are always free to go hangout in.

They also offer art classes, sometimes free and sometimes for pay, with what seems very reasonably priced.

Ever since Covid times, I began to notice that they have free project bags that you can swing by and pick up, and take home for the kids to do. They are still doing that - which is very amazing and awesome that they offer such a thing!

Also, they host various events throughout the year, such as Celebrate Springfield, which is a free event, where kids can do all kinds of cool crafts and activities for free, and there are vendors, and food trucks.

This is a great fixture in Springfield and such a great resource to utilize....

The artwork was beautiful. However the security guards need to be retrained! I brought my mentally disabled uncle there. He had never been there and I want him to be able to go and enjoy the artwork like anyone. He has a mind mentality of about a 7 year old. He understands yes, no and dont do that. However it takes him a couple times to know what he can and can't do. He wasn't touching anything but he got to close to the artwork, so the guard came and talked to us. He was very rude and had no understanding that my uncle is challenged. The guard followed us around the whole place like we were going to steal something. So frustrating and believe the guards really need to be trained to deal with people better! I also think the front desk could have been more helpful with guiding us in a better direction also. A little training could go really far. I will be taking him back but to the kids area first, then...

Me and a friend went here on a whim on Wednesday, it was pretty fun! a good few art styles/mediums, included a few things about some of the artists, great lighting. also included some things for the general public to contribute to with both a binder full of blank paper to write/doodle a little something in, and a whole room with big wood canvases and free colored pencils to use on the canvas and draw something on the boards! overall very nice, staff super friendly and helpful!

Unfortunately by the time we got to this museum (visiting from out of town) it was half an hour before it closed. But we still spent a pleasant and fairly peaceful 30 minutes surveying the museum and its exhibits, both the permanent collection and a neat exhibit on watercolors. There is a really nice area for kids that allows them to play and explore with art-related materials. It's not a large museum but it appears to be well cared for.
