Older than Glensheen, and is more relaxing and cozy.
I had attended a tour at Glensheen in Duluth and they mentioned the Fairlawn Mansion being older. So I was intrigued and skipped across the Blatnick bridge and made my way to Fairlawn. Easy access from 2nd Street. It was off tourist season (Late April) and I happened to arrive in between tour times and was able to meet the director while I looked in the gift shop. She was very friendly. My tour guide was very informative and knew her information well.
Previous reviews have noted that tour guides were not up to speed with their knowledge, and the response was that newer recruits were being trained in because more seasoned guides graduated and moved away. I would say that problem has been fixed based on the tour I received. I apologize I cannot remember her name but she did a fantastic job!
On the third floor they have a replica of the SS Meteor which was donated. I am looking forward to partaking of that tour soon. That museum a stone's throw from the Mansion. Pair it with a picnic on Barker's Island and you have a recipe for a fun day!
I enjoyed all the floors of the mansion. It would be neat to see a "nook and cranny tour" to borrow Glensheen's naming package. For instance, I would pay again for a different tour to be able to ascend to the widow's peak tower, and other places not available on a normal tour.
The cost for the tour is cheaper than Glensheen which is a plus.
Overall, a wonderful place to stop. Don't let negative reviews of this place...
Read moreThe house itself was really neat inside & the history is cool , the tour, however, was not very good. They said it would take 45 mins to an hour for the tour. We were on a time restriction, so we had to leave before we saw everything due to the tour guide going at such a slow pace. After the explanation of what each room was, she stopped talking & the group of us just stood there in awkward silence for a few minutes before she moved onto the next room. I understand wanting people to be able to really look & take it in, but she should also read the room. If people are awkwardly staring at her for a long period of time, it's time to move on to the next room. That tour could take a way shorter time if the flow was faster. There's only so much to see in each room & the weird pause at the end of each room was totally...
Read moreMy husband and I originally booked a 3:00 tour but the two ladies working at the Mansion suggested that we tour the Fire and Police Museum first because they closed before the Mansion did, so we took their advice and returned for a 4:00 tour. Our tour guides were Francis and Heidi, and they were excellent! They were both very knowledgeable about the mansion's history, and because my husband and I were very interested in the history, they were more than willing to answer our questions!
Francis and Heidi made the tour fun and delightful. They spent almost 2 hours with us and we had a great time!
The Mansion is beautiful and the family history is very interesting. We highly...
