Great Experience for the novice and the experienced fishermen and fisherwomen
Highlights: Affordable enough for students, ease of scheduling, very friendly staff, flexible hours, and most importantly, some darn good fishing.
The four of us in graduate school took time off from our busy schedules to head to Miami. We wanted to do more than sit around the beach so we decided to seek out an adventure. We needed something affordable, something that would take up most of the day, and something active and exciting. So we decided on Deep Sea Fishing.
Although Sea Cross deep sea fishing had less number of reviews compared to the other deep see fishing companies, all of the reviews they had received were phenomenal. With the best pricing, the flexible hours, and good ratings, we decided to give them a try.
Chartering a boat via phone was a breeze and they were very prompt with their response. We were able to book our trip for the next morning in a span of 2-3 hours. Most of us being poor students, we appreciated that they were willing to give us a few more hours for a lower price so we could have the full experience.
On our boat we had one friend that had been deep sea fishing a few times. However the rest of us had no idea what was going on. And previously having had a less than stellar experience in Mexico with spearfishing, I was not optimistic about catching any fish. I was mistaken.
Within 45 minutes we had our first fish. The captain and the first mate knew exactly where the large body of fish would be by just scanning the skies for birds and the ocean for abnormal movements. Throughout our 6 hour trip, we brought up fish every 30 minutes. The fish ranged from shallow to deep-sea fish (tuna, bonita, snappers, etc.).
We cut up two of the tunas that we caught, and mixed it with the avocado, cilantro, onions, sriracha and limes that we had brought on board. Although it was a simple and unpretentious dish, it was probably the best ceviche and sashimi I'd ever had in my life.
Our prized catch of the day was the Wahoo. As soon as it was hooked, the captain and the first mate knew that it was going to be a big one. They put our experienced friend to work. The wahoo put up a good fight but he was able to bring it up. My friend was so ecstatic that he decided to get the fish mounted. The fish was measured, photographed, and cleaned for dinner.
When we were heading back to shore, we were pleasantly surprised by several last minute catches. At shore, they even made sure that our other friend was given the opportunity to catch another large fish. The captain knew exactly where the fish would be, and directly when to drop the bait. Immediately after the bait was dropped, a large barracuda was hooked. He put on a show, put up a good fight, but was ultimately brought up onto the boat.
When we returned to the dock, they let us keep as many fish as we wanted and even cleaned it for us. They taught us know how to clean and cook the fish properly. The rest of the fish was saved so the captain and the first mate could give it to people in need.
Overall, the trip was a incredible success and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our Miami trip was exponentially more meaningful because of this trip. I highly recommend to anyone and everyone that wants a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for everything and we hope to return soon.
Cheers, Alex, Trent,...
Read moreI decided to use Sea Cross because of the reviews I saw on Google. The reviews on here can be very misguiding. If you're looking to really enjoy the sport and catch, than this isn't right for you. If you're only out to have a good time and bath in the sun, than this might be fitting. Which brings me to my second point- the captain advertises this boat as being good for 6 people when in fact it can only fit about 2 people comfortably if you're casting and reeling your own rods. Third thing is they do not let you cast and reel your own rods on this boat. We spent the whole day riding around with rods casted into the ocean- that was the only way to catch the fish off season. Lastly- Captain Ralph is very polite and customer centric before you take the ride, but once your back with fish in hand- he becomes very stand offish and insists on keeping the fish for himself. Only after insisting he let us keep them, he said ok but that he would not clean them for us. We were tired so we decided to just walk away and leave the fish behind, but since I knew I was going to leave a bad review at that point, I felt obligated to go back and tell him how I felt. He told me he'd clean them and let us have them- but hat was after he already packed them away in the refrigerator. He clearly didn't want us to keep the fish. Overall- I would caution anyone that is really interested in casting and reeling your own fish and keeping them, not to go with this company. All around...
Read moreI don’t usually give a 1 star review but I think this one deserves it, not because my group and I have gone out to sea for 4 hours and did not catch a fish. I don’t take that into account since a bad day of fishing Anyone has it, but there are many points on which I base my score. The crew was asking for tips before the trip started. In web description it says that “On board you will find many comforts of home, including air conditioning, a multimedia system”, this is a big FAKE, No A/C inside and not only that, the inside of the boat is dark and quite dirty. “Live Bait”, another fake. 4 hours and none of the 6 people who went touch a reel. “Boat is equipped with fishfinder” which I doubt since it is quite difficult to understand that with this technology it spends 4 hours circling and does not bite anything. The effort of the team was not so noticeable, since at the end when picking up 2 of the rods they did not have bait in, that could take hours and nobody noticed. maybe some of this influenced that nothing was caught, another thing to mention is the fact that due to a bad turn of the boat all the lines got tangled, the ship’s crew blamed us “the clients” for this because it was bad luck the fact that we had a Gopro on board. The experience was not good, we don’t recommend anyone. What they offer is not even close to reality. , this its a waste of time and money , if you looking to waste you time and money don’t keep looking this...
