I've shopped this flea market since it opened many years ago. When I first started shopping here, prices were decent on almost everything one could find.
However, as of today, it appears those decent prices are no more. In fact, prices on everything that I looked at were hardly what I think anyone should expect of items in flea markets. Today's prices felt more like I was shopping at an antique store.
For example, when one finds vintage glass pieces at book prices or higher, which was, by far, the case with every single glass item I picked up today, one expects to be in a so-called antique store.
I distinguish a flea market not so much by its variety of selections of used items, but by the prices for these items. At flea markets, I expect to find lower-priced items than what I find on similar items in antique stores. I also expect to find that some of the merchandise at flea markets is not in its most un-flawed of used conditions.
Many glass pieces I found today were by no means perfect (i.e., many had scratches, chips, nicks, etc.), even though some were flawless, yet prices were more in line with what I am used to seeing for antique stores.
"Book price" refers to prices listed in books by collectors of antiques for antiques or vintage collectibles. At least one problem with any seller using these is that what you think it's worth is only what it's worth if a collector is willing to pay your price for it. And, this is one collector who you can bet will never pay book price for anything he collects.
Many of the prices on the items I saw today we're just laughable. I laughed til I left today because I know what happens to sellers whose booths have overpriced everything inside them.: you're out of business in no time. Next...
Some of you sellers are not going to be pleased to hold on to the items with which you fill your rented spaces. If you hope to sell and to keep selling, don't get on a high horse when pricing your items, and if you've been on one, get off it quickly. What happens is your booth fills up and stays full with the same items because no one is buying them with the high prices you want for each of them. What happens is, at the end of each month, you're paying more in rent than you ever even began to sell. That means you're losing money just to hold onto items you bought cheaply at auctions, sales, and garage sales.
If you want to make money in the business of flea market finds, you have to price things to move. Price items too high, and you'll stack items on top of each other until you can't buy more to sell. Don't be greedy when you're pricing things. If you got a good deal, give your customers a good deal. Price items so folks will rush out the door with things from your booths.
That's the best way to do it. Trust me. I've been doing this as a customer for more than 15 years, and I have put in my time as a seller, too. It only works when its done this way. Otherwise, you'll end up broke--with a bunch of overpriced stuff that you're suddenly...

Read moreIn Texarkana for the weekend and had some time to kill so my husband and I decided to stop here. My sister recently purchased a new home and loves shabby chic décor. I was hoping I could find her something for a surprise gift. Boy did we luck up! We found her two white distressed end tables and a white distressed dining table with four chairs! All for under $220! All the pieces are nice, heavy, solid wood. Thankfully, we drove our F150 from Georgia to Texarkana and everything fit perfectly! My sister is going to be soooo surprised and happy! The staff was also very nice...
