Oh, where would one start? Waited two months after opening to go and see what the hype was and was sorely disappointed. The time was 7PM on a rainy night. The parking lot was not really full BUT no one could enter the lot as the drive though was backed up and was one car into Texas Blvd and therefore blocking the driveway. After parking next door, went inside and found only three people in line at the counter and several tables and booths were open. Placed our meager order, sat down and waited, and then waited, and then waited again, AND WAITED SOME MORE! After 42 minutes and other order numbers being called past ours, we approached the counter and asked where our order may be. After having to prove our order was legit, the counter hostess said they were just now making it (some five orders called past ours). She then interrupted the kitchen staff and asked them to make the order (which had obviously been lost as once we got our receipt back, it was caked with cheese and grease). Not one time was an apology made nor did the supervisor (Tanya) offer any assistance or appear concerned that there were some blatant ineptness occurring in the procedures or customer service. It just so happens that as a cook at the very first Taco Tico which opened in this city and not having umpteen employees and techno-gadgets handling orders, a total of four people handled orders more efficiently than this place. This new establishment may have the same name and some simulance of the food, but it is NOT the Taco Ticos of the past. Unless the service improves overwhelming in the next six months (and that's gracious), then I suspect the restaurant will be in need of serious...
Read moreI was apprehensive at first, considering they sell their ground beef mixture, which meant there was something unique about their recipe; however, upon trying the food, it was fantastic for the most part, aside from the liquid cheese that got a bit 'bleh' the more I ate.
The menu itself is nothing short of eclectic, with such selections as a taco tater tots, and the star of the show, the taco burger. Their selection is very fun, and quite affordable, so it's very easy to simply order a bunch of different items to share and see which are your favorites. The taco burger, by the way, was heavenly.
The only blemish on this visit was the wait staff, which seemed annoyed that we were there. I'm very understanding that shifts are long, and friendliness doesn't have to be exuberant; I'm sure the staff works hard. But it felt uncomfortable to order (this was our first time, and with the extensive menu, it took awhile to figure out what we wanted) beneath the gaze of a cashier that, again, seemed annoyed that we had decided to eat there.
I don't grade wait staff as harshly, simply because of how broad and inconsistent it can be from day to day, hour to hour, but nevertheless, it was a slight on an otherwise excellent visit after a two hour drive to get there. Definitely worth it every...
Read moreWas so glad to hear that Taco Tico had been reopened. Taco Tico was my introduction to Mexican food when I was probably about 10 years old back in the mid-70s. Yes, I know this isn't "REAL" mexican food, but I always loved Taco Tico even after learning what real Tex-Mex and Authentic mexican food is. I moved away in the 80's but whenever I was back in town, would try to make it to Taco Tico. Then it closed and I thought never again would I taste their wonderful beef enchiladas with the finely shredded cheese and unique flavor of the sancho. Then I heard it was reopened. Was it as good as I remember, probably not, but it was really good. The quality of the food was great and the flavor of the sancho and enchiladas were very close to what I remember. The beans were close to what I remember as well. The rice not so much but it was decent. Also, the hot sauce they serve on the side was lacking...could use improvement. But all in all it is a wonderful trip down memory lane, too bad its not in the old location on New...
