Went yesterday with the family to see Lion King, looking forward to the new seats and upgraded theatre experience. Staff was great, cheerful and pleasant. But that's where the good experience ends. In short, the upgrade money seems to have been spent on the wrong things.
We walked into the theatre and sat down on the great-looking new seats. And boy, were they firm, and plastic-feeling pleather. I tried to recline it only to find out they are not recliners - the back just tilts a bit if you push hard. Since the seat bottom didn't tilt or slide at all, it felt weirdly uncomfortable. The seats are also on a semi-flat floor, don't tilt back enough, and the screen is very high (not at all eye level) so the kids will not see the lower portion of the screen without sitting on their legs or standing up.
Sound during the movie was just OK, sort of flat and thin, with poor surround. This was more like someone didn't properly adjust the system as better sound would come through during the high-volume action parts.
The door puller to our theatre was defective and would pull the door shut hard, shaking the back wall. As this was a family movie with lots of kids, people keep coming in and out all movie long, that door slamming shut over two dozen times.
Based on what my wife said, bathrooms were apparently not touched, looked old and dingy, missing moulding, still had carpet in part of the floor (in a bathroom!), and the floor was dirty.
The worst part of all was the heat. Yes it was hot outside yesterday (over 94) but to sit in a theatre on pleather seats with inside temperatures in the 80s was very bad. We were all sweaty by the end of the movie, my back dripping sweat, shirt sticking to me like I had just worked out. I asked the cleanup staff what was the deal with the AC and they said "it was just fixed this morning and it's the coolest it's been in weeks". Another staff walked in to clean and exclaimed "woo, it's cool on here!" apparently because it's even hotter elsewhere in the theatre.. It was in fact cooler outside on the sidewalk as there was a breeze.
We will definitely wait a while before coming back, give the theatre time to fix some of these issues like the AC and...
Read moreNever going back. Tonite we 2 adults and 2 kids went to see Dogman on a snowy evening. The place was empty and left a mess from earlier showing. The sound was a problem. It was intermittent with no music in a majority of the movie that should have had sound/music. Not a real big deal but when the staff was made aware it was as if we were a burden to them. No attempt to make it right - we were given 1 pass for a for future movie. I’d rather have known ahead of time but 1 free pass for my whole family? Younger inexperienced staff that doesn’t under Customer service. When I asked again at the end she said that we could have been nicer about letting them know? Haha I love supporting local, and the history of the theatre but not with a customer service experience like that. Similar experience at Moana 2 at Tinseltown with sound issues and the tried fixing it multiple times. When it was fixed they restarted the movie for everyone and noticed the inconvenience and gave out free movie passes for Everyone in attendance.
Spend the money and go somewhere else. You definitely get what...
Read moreSincerely sad to see that Strand Theatre is not only extremely under kept, but also serviced by rude kids. As a local and historical theater I have chosen to support over the past few years, but I will not support snotty attitudes and smirks while I'm trying to take my son out to do something fun and buy tickets for a movie and snacks to go with the movie... As if we inconvenienced her because she had to pause the text she was texting while we waited at the counter to get snacks and then cut us off saying a total 3x while we were still trying to decide what else we wanted from the young gentleman actually running the concession part.... All while another young staff sat in the office texting. Also, the concessions were lacking. Popcorn looked like it had been in there sinse yesterday. No slushies. Only had large cups for fountain drinks... AND the seats are horrendously uncomfortable. I'm disappointed to see our local historical theatre like this. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be bringing my...
