Ambucs Park — Attraction in Urbana

Review written 12/27/2024. Nice park to walk or park your car and relax etc. Usually has a portapotty open in winter when the facility bathrooms close for winter. Has accessible playground area for people with physical disabilities.

Has some covered areas with picnic tables

Has a bridge to walk over and some benches and playground equipment

Downsides are it’s right next to the like sewage or wastewater or something treatment plant and sometimes the park smells bad.

Also a downside is that sometimes depending on the weather and wind conditions, you can hear some kind of shooting training going on maybe from the Champaign county jail area nearby. It’s not very pleasant to go to a park and hear tons of gunshots off in the distance and I wish these practice times would be broadcast more to the public as to not startle people with PTSD etc. Maybe they are broadcast on police social media pages or something idk but it can definitely be startling.

Also a downside is that some of the areas you can drive turn into gravel and become super muddy and have some deep dangerous potholes and end in a dead end but there’s no warning signs about how it’s a dead end so if you drive that way to try to see more areas of the park, you may...

Surprised this place has such positive ratings. This park is immediately south of the U-C Sanitary District's wastewater treatment plant and it smells TERRIBLE. I couldn't stand the stench and I'm sure it's not healthy for children to be inhaling these toxic fumes. It's revolting that a park for children is located right text to a wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater plant also seems to attract hoards of mosquitoes: we have been playing outside in other areas around town daily without any mosquito problems but when we arrived at Ambucs we were immediately ambushed by them!! They were everywhere. The adjacent repugnant wastewater plant combined with the ubiquitous mosquitoes made for a terrible experience and we will never return to Ambucs Park. This field for baseball especially is very dangerous for age 10u and up. As an umpire, there was very little room for the catcher and I behind the plate.

On a past ball bouncing back from the back stop, it is too close to the home plate. This field is nice and needs the focus and attention before someone gets seriously hurt.
