For a relatively small park, it sure has a lot of features.
Plenty of great walking trails. The different trails cross each other so you can switch up your route without really wandering into foreign territory.
The trails stretch through the woods and into the open park and over a foot bridge on the water. In addition to the natural scenery, there are some cool buildings and old heavy machinery left over from the mining days which are interesting to see.
The park stretches across Woodridge road, but there is an underground pedestrian tunnel. Don't be one of the silly folks darting across the street. It's a busy road and there's a safe tunnel to use instead. The tunnel is short and full of natural lighting during the day; it is clean and safe.
There is ample parking on the open side of the park and a smaller satellite lot on the wooded side. Portable toilets are in the big parking lot.
My only real complaint about the park is that it's always full of people taking professional family photos. But I guess I can't really complain about that. It's free to do there and beautiful, so why not. Also, I am guilty of hiring someone to photograph my own family there! So I really can't complain.
There isn't any space for sports type stuff. No big open areas. It's mostly a walking trail park. I sometimes see people fishing in the big pond.
TL;DR: family friendly...
Read moreThis is a rather interesting place. First it is in a suburban setting with all of the obligatory amenities. Second is the beautiful lake. This feature must be stocked with fish and fishing is allowed for kids only, I believe. Third on my list are the walking trails. Their is an assortment of these and all are well marked as well as they are used. The really cool thing, for my moneys worth is the historical features. This area was one of the earliest coal mines in Colonial America. They have several cut stone buildings left over from the mining operations. Plus a reproduction of a large machine that was used in the almost primitive mine. Free parking, picnicking areas, etc. Come see this Park and bring your loved ones and your...
Read moreWe went here on a beautiful Sunday when the weather was in the 70’s and sunny. I liked the lake (though there was duck feces) as well as the large trees. The crumbing old stone building— which I’m guessing was the mine or something historic— was interesting to see, but a large rusty metal fence obstructed the view.
I also found it odd we didn’t see a single restroom in the area we walked. The bridges and tunnels were narrow too, so it can get pretty crowded walking on them with other people. Good place for a walk and to look at a couple points of interest, but the lack of restrooms and tight walkways kept the experience from being...
