Our first time visiting this theater and it was a very positive experience. We were invited to attend opening night of "A Song For Coretta" by Pearl Cleage. The play was very moving and covered a lot of ground. The one act play was about 75 minutes of riviting information about Coretta Scott King and her life from the perspective of four very different black women as they interact with an interviewer and each other while waiting outside the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia to pay their reapects. The entertaining encounter became a highly emotional learning experience for everyone present, including the audience. By the end of the show, everyone in the room was singing, clapping and wondering where the time went!
The theater space is very unique in that it could be utilized in a variety of ways. I've included a photo of the sparce yet effective set depicting the exterior of the church where the action takes place. The ensemble cast gave a performance that was moving, emotional and informative. Dialog on a whole was clear and understandable. My only complaint was with the sound quality of the video opening. The speakers sounded like they were out of phase and way too small to fill a room that size with any kind of decent sound. It definitely took me out of the moment and fortunately didn't last very long.
All in all, we had a very enjoyable evening and look forward to seeing more productions here...
