Very fun and inviting place. Firstly, outside there is a caboose you can stay in for the night! Second, there is a free library in the front of it shaped like little train cars, books for adults and children!
Right when you walk in at the bottom of the stairs there is a big red button to press to activate the train set and slot car tracks. With a little sky trolley as well.
Going up the stairs at the booth to pay, there is a check in sheet to sign if you'd like and shows where everyone has visited from. The pay booth also has two trains running around it as well! Adults were moderately priced at $12 and children I believe were $6. They give you a little map showing what is in each room and the staff here are so friendly and nice and very patient answering every question.
There were two floors, the first floor had a bunch of different sections of toys and dolls/action figures and games. All in sections from their dates and their history of they had it. Right in the main lobby was a Lego train set with little bubbles for kids to crawl under it and poke their heads through! As well as free pinball machines to play. There was even a room full of Rokenbok for kids to remote control the little rc cars around to shuffle the balls around.
Upstairs besides two rooms, was mostly a giant train floor with rooms of different types of model trains. The O scale layout was very impressive and very interactive, each button activated something and kept you entertained. There was a room for Lionel and G scale as well as little wooden trains to play with.
Another room had a MASSIVE 22' Disney puzzle in a room full of old children's toys and a very big GeoTrax set for kids to play with as well.
There is a huge room dedicated to Kinex roller coasters and rides, unfortunately most of them weren't working or under repair, but still cool having them in the dark and glowing up.
There is also another room for HO. And this HO train layout is massive and they had a little scavenger hunt to find all 15 dinosaurs that we had fun to find them all. The only downside is the HO train layout was only running one little engine with out cars. But understandingly, maintaining that size of a layout is tricky without help.
All in all, had a great time and experience. Great pricing, and great...
Read moreThis place is awesome! I was worried that this museum wouldn't be as much fun as my kids expected, but I ended up having a hard time convincing them to leave!
The rooms downstairs have cases along the walls with a variety of vintage toys and games (which I found fascinating), and in the middle of each room was something interactive for the kids to do, which they loved! The Lego dump trucks were a favorite. We all loved playing the pinball machines in the main room, and the nickelodeon was neat to watch, too!
Upstairs is trains and remote controlled cars. I loved how the trains were set up with a variety of buttons to push to make different things move, and the kids loved the dark room with the lighted amusement park rides.
The staff there were very friendly and helpful. Oh, and brownie points for having chairs in each room so that parents could rest if the kids got really interested in playing with something. I don't think I've ever seen anyplace else offer that, and i definitely appreciated it!
I would recommend this...
Read moreGreat museum with a diverse selection of historic items. There are model trains here of various scales, the Marx Toys section, puzzles, board games, knex, and more. Many of the displays are interactive for the younger crowd. Lots of Marx Toys which was fun to see especially the huge Big Loo robot. If you are a Peanuts fan there's a whole level dedicated to that collection.
Very friendly curator too.
The museum skews to a younger demographic but I feel older adults would actually enjoy this place most. The museum is in a repurposed historic school building with beautiful tin ceilings and moulding. Lots of the original details of the building remain down to the art deco era restrooms.
For those musically inclined, I found about 5 different antique pianos sprinkled about the place. Fun to play each of them while appreciating the workmanship and "old timey" tuning they've all developed.
If I was a local I'd go multiple times. As an out of towner, its an easy recommendation for anyone going through the Pittsburgh -...
