I love DiCarlos Pizza, but his particular shop sux bigtime. There seems to a problem with people calling in and ordering their pizza, but not showing up to pick it for hours. I went into this place at 5:30 pm on a Friday and did not walk out with my 16 slices until 7:00pm. AN hour and a half standing in that crowded little hole waiting on pizza with a crust too thick and burned on the bottom. There is a difference between crispy and burned. There are no seats and nothing to even lean against in the shop, so the hour and a half wait was very strenuous. I would have walked out after a half hour, which is what i would do at any other establismnet that made me wait that long, but they collected the money as soon as I took my number and placed my order. This particular DiCarlos will NEVER get another cent from me, NEVER. Yes, DiCarlos is a tradition and Valley Hoopies seem to think it is the Nectar of the Gods, well, it is good, depending on where you buy it. I like the down town location, the Wintersville shop and the Weirton Shop near Gabriels. That Elm Grove location is full of rude people who don't seem to have a problem with leaving their PAID FOR customers to WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT AND...
Read moreEvery DiCarlos around here is different but Elm Grove is where it's at. It's been the same down there forever. They only take cash, you call with the amount that you want, you get your number, and when you go in let them know what number you are so you can pay. They will let you know how long it will be, and when you arrive you may wait for about 5-10 minutes for your pizza. They are one of the best so there are times they are behind and packed. You may have to wait longer. It's just the way it goes. And most of the employees have been there for so long at times you may think they are being rude by their short exchange but they are just trying to get through their rush time. It is a tradition around here so if you're from out of town you may not get it. I feel as though the Elm Grove location is a staple in Wheeling, many growing up with lazy football Sunday's with beer and DiCarlos. It's obviously worth it to many people seeing as they are so popular and will wait for their pizza no matter what. You can get extra cheese and pep on your pizza, or get the extra bags to put the amount you want on yourself. Make sure to check their hours too because if they are slow they may stop taking...
Read moreIn town visiting an old friend. I asked about Wheeling's food scene and if there is anything that Wheeling is known for.
He told me about this place. We ended up picking up (car pickup, no inside service) a full tray with two bags of pepperoni and two bags of banana peppers.
The pizza is much better than the description lol. I thought of it as microwaved pizza lunchables before I had my first bite.
I think I get it. To achieve crust/bread this crisp (on the bottom and the crust), you would need to bake it for a long time. In that time, the cheese would become burnt (like reheating a slice too long). Adding the cheese after baking ensures the cheese is never burnt.
I can't say the toppings are very good. They don't have the same character/texture/taste when they haven't been kissed with heat. Getting them in a Walmart Ziploc bag is funny though. I feel like it would be fun to picnic with.
I like the spirit of doing things a certain way whether people like them or not. Worth a try if you're into pizza. Have to say, it was surprisingly unique... something that is hard to say about...
