Luckily it's free, hands down the least interesting art museum I've been to after visiting them in dozens of different countries. Genuinely shocked this is a national gallery of any sort. There's a handful of art that is mildly interesting but most is extremely repetitive and just bad. There's honestly about 4 or 5 pieces of work that are worth looking at. The majority is very simplistic and not interesting. Think literally about 30 or 40 different arrangements of basic shapes placed side by side each other as if they're monumental works of art worthy of being regarded as a grand collection. One or two of these would surely be sufficient but the museum (and country?) apparently lacks anything else worthy of being hung in their national gallery.

Only giving 2 stars since it's free and there were 2 pieces of work I genuinely enjoyed looking at, and a few others...

Super...

A beautiful place of contemporary art and modern architecture. Thoughtfully planned, spacious exhibition of paintings, installations, projections and sculptures. There is no English tour guide available however the entry and locker are free. The museum is relatively small compared to other capitals but intimate and will take you about 60-90 minutes to explore depending on your lust of interpretation. CCTV was in operation everywhere and guards were standing at every corner of the exhibition which was kind of odd. There's an inviting yet pricey café at the entrance waiting for you after the visit. Can recommend to dip into Uruguayan perspective...

I love modern art museums, you never know what to expect, but I always find exhibits that amuse and entertain me. There is quite a bit of video art here, I found the exhibit of the "Cow munching grass from a Bucket" together with the sounds, most amusing. Then there is the video show of the two guys formally dressed making bird like noises. The art is very well spread out in big spaces, I was first in on Saturday when it opened at 1.00pm and had the place to myself. This is a nice very spacious artistic area, and free to visit. There is a small green park area outside and of coffee shop. Definitely worth a visit, go with an open mind and enjoy.

I had a wonderful experience at the National Museum of Visual Arts. I really appreciated the thoughtful connection between modern and traditional art, showcasing works from some of Uruguay’s most famous artists. The museum is well-maintained, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. As the daughter of a renowned artist, I was especially excited to share the photos I took with my mother, and she absolutely loved them! It made me wonder if the museum accepts works from international artists. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Montevideo who enjoys art and wants to explore Uruguay’s rich artistic heritage. It’s truly a gem!
