Boutique Hotel Herzhof — Hotel in Gemeinde Mittelberg

We enjoyed our short stay at the Herzhof. Our room was a very nice size and standard for the "comfort double category" with a huge walk-in shower in the bathroom and many places to store clothing and personal items in the room and a small balcony looking out over the valley and mountains. The room was spotlessly clean, the Putzfrau is amazing! She would clean the room in the shortest amount of time when we were at breakfast, I haven't had such great cleaning service at a hotel in a long time! As for communal areas, there is a small lounge hidden on the first floor with sofas, long table, books, board games and a large screen tv. It's kind of like a big family room rather than a lounge. A little effort could make it a bit more romantic in the evenings for more of an apero/lounge atmosphere as there is really no bar at the hotel, just a small counter in the restaurant which isn't really set up to sit at and have drinks. Breakfast was excellent with a creative freshly prepared egg menu and a nice small buffet of everything you could expect at a nice breakfast. Only downside is that it starts a bit late at 8am which is a problem if you want to be on the piste early when it opens. The included dinner in the Halbpension changes everyday, usually consisting of a delicious salad buffet, a soup, choice of fish or meat, dessert and cheeses. If you are vegetarian, probably best to say in advance as there was never any vegetarian main course offered during our stay. The quality of the food was very good and prices of wine fair. The small spa in the basement has a wellness pool with a bit of resistance that you can turn on to swim laps. The beamed image of moving aquarium fish was a nice touch as well as the mood lighting. In addition there is a very nice steambath, sauna and a "himalaya salt room" which I would have preferred more as a salt bio sauna (it was a bit cold for me being only slightly warmer than room temperature). My only real complaint is that, ironically, as it's called Herzhof, the place lacks a bit of heart and Austrian charm. Usually, in most smaller hotels we have visited, the owner/s or GM or chef introduces him or herself at some point every evening to make sure everything is going well, but we had no such introduction during our stay. We weren't really sure if a family owned it or it's part of a bigger company because it lacked a certain homely feeling despite the nice furnishings and friendly staff. The closest staff member to come close to this Austrian schmäh we were looking for was a very chatty and personable young German, Marcel. (As a side note, it was a bit weird to see so many Christmas decorations still up at the hotel at the end of February, and maybe it's a question of taste, but for me it falls a bit in the category of neglected details, although I know I am being really picky. It could definitely be worse...!). However, because The Herzhof lacked a certain personal touch and charm we were looking for during our stay in the Austrian mountains, it wouldn't be first on my list to return, but I would still recommend it as a solid, no-nonsense choice for a very good standard of small hotel with very good...

Stayed here for 6 days in the Widderstein suite. Very, very comfortable. Great beds. Hotel is a few km's uphill from the town centre. Walking is possible, quite a steep climb, but can be done. Diners were all-inclusive. Most of the time quite nice, sometimes combinations were not to our tasting. Breakfast was nice, a lot of choices in different eggs, which was nice. Maybe some local cakes could be added to breakfast buffet as a treat ;-) The swimming pond is very, very nice. Took a swim everyday. Sunbeds could be arranged a bit more attractively. Very comfortable boutique hotel, very nicely decorated rooms, excellent beds, great breakfast, stunning views and lovely and helpful hosts. When the pull-out sofa turned out to be quite uncomfortable, the manager brought out a mattress from her private quarters to ensure our son could have a good sleep, so very kind!! Great wellness facilities too, there is a cold but nice natural pool, or pond, and a sauna, steam bath and indoor pool as well. Wonderful place for relaxing. ||Highly recommend...
