Grand Oriental Hotel Dhaka — Hotel in Dhaka Metropolitan

I stayed for 2 nights in this hotel in early October 2019 having booked online mislead by the obviously fake previous reviews. The first room we were shown had many bulbs missing, the bathroom so dimly lit it was practically unusable, no socket for the bedside light to be plugged into and it was honestly only superficially clean. We were shown another room which was only marginally better and I formed the view that this was as good as it was going to get so accepted it even though they had to change the bathroom light bulbs so that it was even bright enough to shave in. Only two towels provided so we had to ask for hand towels and a bath mat. The basin and mixer tap were both loose. No top sheets provided under not too clean top quilt cover. An electric kettle was provided but no tea/coffee etc ???? The carpet was filthy and when I asked if the hotel had such a thing as a vacuum cleaner I was greeted with uncomprehending stares. The room safe did not work. Breakfasts only barely average. It is in Gulshan 1 so not that close to the airport but in fairness they did provide a paid for Uber car for each way airport transfers. Only one of the two lifts were working which made it over crowded as there was a bussiness conference taking place on the top floor. Overall certainly not a 4 star by any means. I visit Dhaka on regular bases due to my work. The first time I stay at The Grand Oriental Hotel during the March 2020 covid19 lockdown until the first week of May 2020. During the whole time, I was looked after very well by staff and management. Since then, I have stayed at this hotel more than once. This hotel is perfect for business travellers. Location is excellent, eating in or out a verity of chooses and what can I say about the staff, they are second to none, friendly and caring bunch of people especially Maruf and Rana, always make you feel homely and safe.
