The Athens Gate property and condos are incredible. The design and layout of the condo was great and quite large. These are fairly new modern condos. All furnishings are new and make you feel like you are in a high end 5 star resort. Granite counter tops throughout, nice wood cabinets, new fridge/freezer, nice stove, tile floor throughout, central air, brand new thick luxurious mattresses. The kitchen is very nicely appointed for when you would like to prepare a meal, which we did quite a few times. The balcony is large and spacious and faces the ocean without obstructions. The pool is big enough to relax and has a swim up to the bar for a fresh and tasty libation.
One of the best parts of our 10 day stay was all of the staff. Cindy, who handled most of the day to day activities at Athens Gate, was outstanding in every way. Cindy booked us snorkeling trips, breakfasts, lunches and dinners even when we didn't even ask. She also gave great suggestions for dining out and places to see. Cindy always went out of her way to make sure we were having a great time.
Dennis is the head maintenance manager for the property and always had a smile on his face. Dennis insisted on carrying our bags to our room when we first arrived and he knew exactly when we were departing, again insisting on carrying our bags, one on his back while he carried the other in one hand. He made it seem like our suitcases were filled with feathers.
The bartenders Danny, Rob and Byron were great and hilarious. Also, all three gave gave great suggestions for lunch venues depending on our hunger levels and taste buds.
We were also fortunate to meet the owners of Athens Gate, Lori and her husband Greg. Both were completely down-to-earth wonderful people. Lori went out of her way to get my wife some organic peanut butter that contained no sugar. My wife was stunned by her kind gesture.
To sum up our stay...phenomenal from the first moment to our final departing. Wow!
Thank you Cindy, Lori, Dennis, Rob and Danny. You guys are a notch above the rest!

Read moreThis is my second stay at what is now known as Athen's Gate. It was great to see familiar faces after not traveling during Covid and also really great to see the friendly people of Ambergris Caye begin their recovery from the pandemic.
In Belize in general you can really turn off your brain and enjoy life, but especially here at Athen's gate. It all begins with Glory the concierge, front desk, middle man, etc. Whatever you want she can help. She'll help you arrange for a golf cart, excursions, restaurant reservations, massages, take-out, or anything else you may need. She makes everything so seamless and easy.
The property itself is excellently maintained, the pool is crystal clear, and there is a white sandy beach and pier. Don't forget to catch the sunset on the lighthouse, it's breathtaking. The hotel has beach cruisers which we took into town as well as kayaks and stand up paddle boards.
We stayed in a three-bed room villa with a master bed/bathroom with jacuzzi and fully equipped kitchen and dining room. It was cleaned often and the beds were very comfortable. A tip would be if you plan on cooking in your villa is to packyour own seasonings and oils you would use in your baggage as the villas have none of these. The wifi was decent, but not strong enough to do major video conferencing or work which is fine by me!
Finally I would be amiss if I didn't mention Rob, the bartender. He is always the highlight of the trip and which I could take him back to America. The drinks are the absolute best. I would suggest the coconut mojito and pinna cola both 10/10 and the best frozen drinks I have ever had. Rob definitely takes pride in his work and you can tell he really enjoys it. How many resort bars do you know that take the time to make their own fruit juices or infuse their own liquor? Above all Rob is a great conversationalist.
I would definitely recommend this...
Read moreI stayed at this hotel hoping for a relaxing getaway, but instead experienced one of the most traumatic events of my life.
The on-site hammock was dangerous and unstable. While I was lying in it, it suddenly ripped apart, sending me crashing to the ground from over 4 feet up. I landed hard on my back and the back of my hand, immediately experiencing symptoms consistent with a concussion: dizziness, disorientation, a pounding headache, and sharp back pain.
Two hotel employees, Rob and Derek, witnessed the entire incident. Not only did neither offer help, but I was left to stumble back to my room alone, dazed and in pain. No one came to check on me. No follow-up. Nothing. Hours passed. I eventually had to ask for ice to reduce the swelling on my head.
What hurt even more than the fall was the utter lack of empathy or responsibility. I emailed the hotel hoping for acknowledgment, some kind of concern. My message was completely ignored.
This wasn’t just a ruined vacation. I was physically hurt, emotionally shaken, and unable to focus on my work or run my business while recovering. I flew home to the U.S. and went straight to the ER for proper medical evaluation, which something I never should have had to do if they had simply done the bare minimum. Picture of the ripped hammock and them removing it after I fell. have many more.
I would never recommend this place to anyone. If a hotel can't take basic safety or human decency seriously, it doesn't deserve your business or anyone else's. Currently consulting with several law firms to pursue this...
