We were staying by the hula, and after a recommendation from the concierge at our resort, decided to give it a try one dinner after a taxi ride back from Caye Caulker.
A simple dinner was all we wanted. Instead we were met with lackluster attention by any semblance of host, confusion over who our waiter was, and curt, minimum attention once we were finally recognized as paying customers.
Their menu is extensive (pejoratively), heavily drink focused, overpriced even by tourist standards, and confused with its identity. What do you want to be, hula? Your location and Hawaiian inspiration scream âtodayâs catchâ, but your American pub flavors and Japanese poke bowls just do not fit. (Toss on the country heavy playlist and youâve got a recipe for disaster.)
Anyways, we placed our drink, mixed âtapasâ and âmainsâ orders (neither of which means what they should to anyone whoâs ever stepped foot in a restaurant before) and waited.
And waitedâŚand waitedâŚand waited.
The ceviche (if one could call a bowl of pico and carrots with a few strewn about shrimps that) was fine.
We could barely stomach the rest of the food because âdue to shortagesâ they were out of many of the core ingredients. The only reason any of us came close to finishing our plates was starvation from waiting.
After calling a manager over to complain we were given a slate of excuses from short staffed to a particularly busy day. That didnât stop the group next to us (who arrive at the exact time as us) from having a perfectly timed dinner, both eating and leaving before a single plate arrived to our table. She did not comp a single item, insisting on a âno refunds policyâ in place regardless of circumstances.
I pity the traveler who finds themself in this...
Read moreWe had the BEST experience celebrating our 10-year anniversary here! From start to finish, everything was top-tier especially our waiter, Josh, who truly made our visit unforgettable. He struck the perfect balance between funny, cool, and professional, and you could tell he really knew the menu inside and out. Every recommendation he made was a hit (shoutout to The Cobra cocktail) and the lobster skewers, which were so good we ordered a second round.
We also tried the Tropical Wontons, and wow. crispy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced... and the sesame sauce is top tier! You can tell everything is made with care and fresh ingredients. Josh even shared a few behind-the-scenes details about how some dishes are prepared, which made the whole experience feel special and personal.
Oh & the setting was beautiful, right over the water with a gentle breeze and just enough shade to stay comfortable. The vibe was laid-back but elevated, the kind of place where you can relax but still feel like youâre celebrating something meaningful.
Between the amazing food, effective drinks, and top-notch service, this place easily earns 5 stars (I wish I could give it more!). Huge thanks again to Josh for making our anniversary fun & unforgettable. weâll...
