Now, I am not usually a negative person, so my experiences may well be disproportionately poor, but my stay at this hostel was below satisfactory.
For starters the location is a minor inconvenience. This hostel is on the outskirts, up a hill and a good deal away from the town (lovely for a quiet night). On the downside, being slightly in the forest, there is an overabundance of mosquitos looking for something to eat every dawn and dusk, with hostel guests being a house favourite for them. The incessant orchestra of bugs can also get a bit annoying while you're trying to sleep.
The atmosphere in this hostel is about as lively as a funeral director's home, due to everyone hiking, or beaching by day and socialising in town at night, completely negating the point of their overpriced bar.
Quality of your sleep will depend greatly on who your roommates are, which one controls the air conditioning remote and how well you deal with a high, uneven pillow. Having traveled for a year and a half, I have never experienced such inconsistent and poor sleep from a hostel, with one night not being able to sleep due to sweltering heat, and another where myself and a roommate woke up in the night and had to leave the room to warm up.
Finally the WiFi... This was the most disappointing element of the 5 day stay. In 2018, where any self respecting establishment provides free WiFi as a basic amenity, Hi Holandes only deem it a "courtesy". When I checked in, reception were more than happy to provide us with the password with the passing comment that it "doesn't work that well". What they should have said is that it doesn't work at all. For 5 days there was no simple way of communicating with other people on the island, planning the next stage of your trip, or researching activities to do that weren't overpriced boat tours.
Just down the road, and for the same price or less you can have this basic service, which always undoubtedly improves the quality of a stay. When confronted with the issue, the hostel refused to apply a measure of goodwill to their prices in compensation for the lack of this service, and left me with a bit of a sour taste from the stay.
On the plus side the breakfast is very good, the free chilled drinking water is greatly appreciated, and the...
Read moreNice little walk from the centre which felt a lot longer in the torrential rain we got caught in on arrival...but once you take some of the trails to and from different areas you realise it's not far at all and quite a pleasant stroll up to the hostel.|The staff were all friendly as were the large majority of people staying, we had a separate room for privacy but would definitely consider a stay in the dorms if on a budget. |Our room was quaint, with a couple of seats outside to relax (would have been nice if we had our own hammock as there were some outside the dorm rooms). The windows did have large gaps where the frames met the window, a definite mosquito invite if we hadn't shoved a load of tissue paper into the gaps to stop them getting in. |The hostel itself had a very relaxed feel to it, my wife described it as "zen"...which I think means the same thing... only issue was that there was a large construction close by to the hostel and the workers worked through the night using the hostel grounds as a throughway to their site...not sure of this was the only option but they were working well into the early hours (woke at 3am hearing them...and some dropped bricks were left shattered on the Ground outside our room....not sure if they were part of the hostel or whether they just allowed them through due to tricky terrain elsewhere?)||Besides this issue, the breakfast was good, they always had coffee waiting, the staff were very helpful and we...
Read moreNice hostel about a ten minute walk from the main town area. It’s a bit of a hidden paradise with lots of beautiful plants, birds, and cute kitties. I spent a whole day just hanging out in a hammock enjoying watching the birds and with a sweet cat sleeping on my lap. They offer a nice breakfast, if quite sweet with several cakes, fruit, granola, and a sandwich with cheese and meat. They don’t sell any tours but it’s easy enough to buy tour packages in town. Rooms are comfortable enough although the power constantly cut out so the AC rarely worked, and the toilet occasionally malfunctioned so we had to call some maintenance guys who quickly came and fixed it. There’s only a couple of charging ports on the ground far away from the beds so it’s not super easy charging your electronics. All in all...
