I want to start the review saying that Jasmine at the front desk saved our stay. Without her the kids would have been utterly devastated with their stay at the hotel and I would have been beyond angry. She listened and apologized and gave us what she could to smooth things over. She made me feel taken care of the kids loved her. She was so nice to my son and I so very much appreciated her. She need a bonus or a raise as she very much deserves it.
We stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms and it was very nice. There needs to be a towel bar put into the bathroom as there was no where to hang used towels except on the door hook or the small bar above the toilet. There is a very large wall that could hold 2 towel bars. Not something I would get angry about but it was frustrating with 2 kids.
Now what made our night terrible was that it was so hot and muggy in the room I felt sick. I felt like it was having the longest hot flash ever. The AC unit was too small for the room. It was set at 61 when we got in and was later told it should only go down to 66 so it doesn't freeze up. Consequently the room never cooled down...so very very hot all night. Whoever designed having all the AC units facing the pool exhaust into that area needs to be fired. The pool area was really nice if you were in the pool but if you were just watching kids it was unbearable. And the heat from that area radiated back into the room through the window every time the kids opened the drapes even a tiny bit.
I had my travel fan so I was able to sleep otherwise my 8 hour drive with the kids the next day would have been a disaster.
Jasmine deserves another shout out for her mazing customer service skills as even after that difficult night, I would absolutely give this hotel another shot when the next time we...
Read moreThis was hands down the worst hotel stay I've had in my life. And I've stayed a lot of different places. Here's everything that went wrong: -We weren't told when booking that the pull put couch was "not suitable for adults", which left one of us to sleep on the old, outdated uncomfortable couch. When we asked what could be done so that we could get another room the manager said there's nothing he could do even though it was their fault. -The front desk staff doesn't know how to put people on hold, and instead just picks up the phone and doesn't say anything, leaving us to listen to them talk to people at the front desk which is a massive breach of privacy, we literally heard room numbers and credit card info. This happened MULTIPLE times. -The room can't use the fan and the heat at the same time, so we would freeze at night to have the fan on as white noise to drown out the hotel noises. -There was chocolate on the floor when we checked in, and we had cats with us! -Spider infested, we saw a dozen over 4 days. -Our key cards didn't work at all, I had to stay in there to let the other person in, even after getting new key cards multiple times. -The bed is so incredibly soft that it messed up our backs and left us literally tilted down at the head of the bed. So cheap! -They charge for a continental breakfast, so cheap, omg. Stale bagels and cereal, great! -Fitness room is dingy and dark and doesn't have any weights. -Bathroom not properly cleaned (toothpaste behind the toilet). -Window has no screen or lock so anyone could just slide the window open from outside! And no way to keep it open as bugs would get in or cats get out.
Would never stay again, do...
Read moreThe Sandman is a great budget hotel with a few perks at a reasonable price. The sandman Castlegar was no exception.
The good list: friendly staff Room presented well walking in and looking around all USB ports that we used to charge devices worked (not always the case in hotels) coffee in the room and more brewed coffee in the lobby Pool was awesome! Warm and inviting Hottub was warm and inviting. Jets worked but slow to turn on we didn’t have pets with us, but as dog owners we liked the idea it was dog friendly the hotel had people but never heard them when we were in the room good shower pressure
Opportunities: The room looked good when we walked in, but there was a used face cloth hanging over the shower rod. I see this more as a staff error vs a hotel flaw, but it was off putting. The pillows were way too high. The beds were comfy but the high pillows were an uncomfortable sleep for both of us. The front desk offers a fruit basket for guests full of “banana bread” quality bananas. Staff error again?
Would I stay here again, yes. It wasnt horrible and there were more good points than opportunities.
Why 3 stars? For a total bill of $177 a night (all taxes in) my priority is a good sleep.
The pillows impacted both our sleep. If I was visiting Castlegar again, I would stay here again, but would bring a pillow from home.
On a positive note, before sleep, the pillows are lovely to prop yourself up to sit up with in bed with a computer, and for decor, but sleeping they were...
