Several months ago, I began planning our trip to Nova Scotia and looking for hotels in the area. We wanted something out of the ordinary with a nice view from our room. We didn’t expect to find such a gem right in the Dartmouth area. The Inn at Fisherman’s Cove is as picturesque as you can get and something you would only expect to find further along the coast. We stayed 11 nights and, because of scheduling, in two different rooms. We were absolutely thrilled with our balcony room overlooking the cove. The sunsets over the harbour were spectacular. While there was air-conditioning, the windows offered enough cross breeze that we rarely turned it on. I thought I would be disappointed when I moved for a few days to the non-balcony room facing the street, but it was equally as charming as the first. Both rooms were beautifully decorated in a manner that didn’t scream large chain hotel. You can tell a lot of thought went into each room. While earplugs were provided to reduce sound at night, I personally didn’t find it to be too noisy at all, and I am a light sleeper. Other guests did not disturb in the least. The beds in each room were different, but both very comfortable and gave me no trouble getting to sleep. The boardwalk at Fishermans Cove was mere steps away and delightful unto itself. We could sit on our balcony of an evening, or we could take a walk along the boardwalk visiting the various little shops, as well as stroll the boardwalk along the shore. Benches abound to just sit and gaze. We watched people fishing for mackerel every evening, the little sandpipers darting across the sand, and even osprey fishing for their evening meal. While the rooms were comfortable and affordable, the real treasures were the owners, David and Jenny. They were so friendly and hospitable. They truly made our stay feel like we were at home. Every morning David greeted us with a smile and asked us if we wanted scrambled eggs or pancakes and some days we had both. There was self serve and could also choose from hard boiled eggs, fresh out of the oven croissants (some were even chocolate!), toast, muffins, and various cereals. We could help ourselves to juice, water, milk, and cream. Coffee was always ready and, on days that we weren’t in a hurry to go out on day trips, we had many friendly conversations with David. If there was any downside to this hotel, it would be the stairs. They are not daunting, but if you have mobility issues you may have a problem. There is one flight to the second floor and another flight to the third. We are healthy seniors and had no issues with the stairs at all. We ended up staying at this hotel for the entire duration of our trip and found it conveniently located to take day trips all over the province from this starting point. On days when we wanted to rest, this hotel made the perfect backdrop. Sitting on the balcony with a good book, one would never guess they were not far from the heart of the bustling city. If one wanted the bustle of a city, the Woodside ferry is only 6 minutes from the hotel, with free parking and free passage for seniors. You arrive at the boardwalk in Halifax, with easy access to Citadel Hill and other attractions. The parking in Halifax is atrocious, so the ferry makes for a convenient, easy, and memorable trip across the harbour with no fuss. There are some great places to eat nearby. The Passage Pizza is about 20 steps from the hotel - a little on the greasy side, but tasty. The Boondock restaurant at Fisherman’s Cove offers a nice variety of dishes and “What’s the Scoop” on the boardwalk has great food, memorable desserts, and ice cream. Both are a quick walk from the hotel. For more economical or fast food, there is an A&W and a Subway both within an easy walking distance. The Gas station and liquor store is in that vicinity as well. Another nice place to visit is the moose at Cow Bay - only a short 8 minutes drive away. Walking the sand bar there at sunset is spectacular - just wear good footwear, it is a rocky shore. We would happily return again when...

Read moreThe room was as advertised, but the advertisement made it sound better than it was. If you are looking for just bare basics for 1 night and need to be in Digby you might be ok here, but I still wouldn't recommend this Inn for many reasons. The room and bedding were dated and had a scent that bothered us so much the entire time we were in the room. I woke up in the middle of the night with a swollen and very sore throat, which I think was from the air or heat in the room – as it went away immediately after we checked out of our room. The Inn didn't have room darkening curtains, and thus, it wasn't dark enough in the morning for us to sleep fully. We also awoke to a lot of early morning fog horns – I guess to be expected in this location. The Inn at Fisherman's Cove is on a cove, I certainly wouldn't consider this an Ocean Front hotel. The add and pictures make it look like a cute, amazing place to stay – but it was not. If you are thinking of saving money by staying in Dartmouth versus staying directly in Halifax, take it from me – the bit of extra money is worth it. You would be better off staying in Halifax because that is where all the fun and good food is to be found. Eastern Passage in Dartmouth is a small fishing place with a lot of boats and some restaurants – there is also a beach where people were fishing, We took the ferry from Dartmouth to Halifax – which is very doable, but you may regret it depending on your type...
