Being in an industry where we get to see the behind the scenes of how hotels work, I must say this place was a let down on a number of levels. We booked over the phone informing the hotel it was going to be a special night for my partner and and I. She took care of everything. She asked if the hotel could do something special for us. Nothing major, a small bottle of wine and some fruit. We were told within a few minutes of checking in we would have something send up. After being checked in on the day we arrived at the hotel for 30 minutes, we were forced to call down and ask. It felt like we were having to beg. Sure it was complimentary but we did have plans for that evening. It turns out the restaurant didn't do what was asked of them or it wasn't communicated. Either way, we had to ask. We were told they could send it up right away, we had to leave however by this point to get to the stores we wishes to visit while down town. We told the desk we would be back by 5pm. We got back at 4:45 as to not be an inconvenience to the hotel and make them wait. We were the one who waited. It wasn't till almost 5:30 and yet a second call to the desk with what felt like begging again. When we finally had someone come up, it was with a plate of chocolate covered fruit. thank god they were covered, the strawberries were white they were so unripe. By this point we have given up on trying and just wanted to enjoy our night we put do not disturb on the door and started getting ready. About an hour later with only a few minutes before we were to head to the restaurant for dinner, the phone rang. It was a porter trying to deliver the wine. Almost 3 hours after we checked in and now 2 hours since the first delivery. I guess they forgot yet again.
The room was meh. Not what I expected from a hotel of this nature. The room was cleaned not bad but clearly lots was missed. This included the pee stain on the toilet behind the lid near the hinges and soap stains on the counter in the bathroom. The hotel and room smelt like a old folk home. It felt dated beyond the historic factor. The room was small. We were upgraded to a King room because of a availability but that same room at a hotel in view of the Elgin was much larger and more luxurious. The TV is just that, a TV. You want netflix, go buy an HDMI cable like we had to and bring your laptop. No Casting ability, nothing. Seems like a very simple upgrade to bring a classic history hotel a bit modern. The wifi wasn't bad. We were able stream with no issues.
Dinner at the hotel was way over priced. Not that money was an issue on this trip but at 60 buck for s steak, the most expensive thing on the menu, I expected more from it. Especially when it comes with fries on the side. My lady had the Salmon. Served with beans in place as a filler. Did they not have enough of what was supposed to come with it? They had to use beans as filler? Ya that makes a for a great night...on the john.
After supper, we decided to finish out night at the pool. We walked in to find a hot tub that could only hold 4 and it was full and the pool was filled with loud kids. We wanted something relaxing but that wasn't happening. Not with kids jumping off the hot tub into the pool. We arrived during the last hour of it being open hoping for a little quiet and was met with parents buried deep into their phones, not watching their kids and the hotel staff coming in every 20 min or so to just walk back out. Upon checking out, we informed the desk perhaps an adult only hour should be done. Not much was said about it from the lady behind the desk and that we should have called. Yes let's do that, make a stink and then sit there like we did nothing.
Needless to say, we wont be back. Thank god we got a deal on the room. I would never pay 400 bucks for this place. It was far from worth it. 3 Stars are for the staff only. They were nice but the hotel operations needs a massive improvement. It was far...
