We stayed at Marae Cabanas for 3 nights in July. The location is great, near the airport and outside the heart of Hanga Roa. You can easily walk into town, the bayfront and to the cementario and ahu tahai for sunset. Anything more would definately be quite a hike. Of course, people come to Rapa Nui to hike, but you would need to stay at least a week for that if you want to see most of the sights. With a car you can do it in two full days with good weather. At Marae there are three cabanas on the site. Ours was in the back. It had a big king bed, a good sized bathroom and shower/tub, a large open closet area, and a good sized full kitchen and fridge with a dining table and small bed. You can hang wet clothes to dry in back of the cabana. We sat outside in lounge chairs in the mornings and also out in the courtyard casita at night and looked at the stars. We loved playing with the cat and watching the neighbor's colorful chickens chase each other around. Some people complain about the noisy roosters, but it was no problem at all for us. Maka is a warm and wonderful host, as is her housekeeper. I got a big smile when she rented us her car for a couple days and as there is no car insurance on the isla she said, "just, you know, take it easy" and that was that. She will arrange to have you picked up and dropped off at the airport if you want. While its only a block or so away and seems silly as you could just walk, I would suggest you take her up on this because if the gate is pulled closed you will never find the place until you get to know it as the signage is inside. Lastly, I guess don't need to say anything about the well known sights of Easter Island, except a couple reminders to be sure to go to Mass if you are there on Sunday as it's quite a unique experience and also to be sure to go to the post office to get your passport stamped. I really loved exploring the beautiful and atmospheric island and the locals handle us visitors with admirable grace. I would highly recommend Marae Cabanas...
Read moreOur small group rented two cabins; Ariki - two bedroom / two bath for 3 weeks and one single – Matariki for 10 days. The cabins are basic, clean, comfortable, functioning kitchens, good location close to the airport and town. Atamu Tekena (Calle Principal) is approx 2 long blocks away and about 25 mins walk to the center of town. Complimentary wifi is available but it does not work very well in the cabins, you get better reception outside on the porch and it tends to be slow. However, the whole island is this way. Hanga Roa does not have many roads, so there was a little more street noise than we would have liked; along with an external alarm (rooster) that started between 3-6 am.||||The cabins have screens on windows and doors to help cool the cabins from the trade winds; fans in bedrooms. All the cabins have a large front porch facing a small garden, which was very pleasant and we spent quite a bit of time on these porches. They also have a nice bbq area, which we did not use. ||||Maka and Vero are sweethearts, very caring and gracious hostesses. Their recommendations on restaurants and activities were excellent. They made our stay very enjoyable and comfortable that Marae became our home away from home.||||Should we have an opportunity to visit Rapa Nui again, will definite stay at Cabanas...
Read moreFirst time to Easter Island. We didn't know what to expect. Selected Marae Cabins based on Tripadvisor reviews and reasonable price. We found everything we expected: comfortable, clean and friendly accommodations, reasonable good location near the airport and a bit away from the main street. Renting a car is a must, otherwise you would spend all your time walking in and out. The owner Ms. Maka (Makarena) was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. ||Of all unexpected problems, one night we were surprised by the neighbor's flock of chicken and roosters who kept singling all night long. Maka was kind enough to move us to another cabin, farther away from the neighbor's back yard where the roosters were singing. Problem solved.||I would recommend the cabins for either short or long term stays. Cabins have well equipped kitchen, although we did not cook at all.||Only low point: WiFi was unreliable, most of the time too slow. Best place in the Island for internet is near the public library, which...
