Just okay. All guest rooms are upstairs where the floors creak like in a haunted mansion. The kitchen is smaller than a Tokyo toilet space and a little grimy as well. Don't even think of preparing your own cooked meal here, there just isn't enough space to do that . Two bathrooms shared amongst, I'm guessing here, around six guest rooms. The host family downstairs don't reply to texts, yet they sent me text messages inquiring about the hour I anticipate vacating on the morning of my departure. Downstairs babies are crying at all hours of the day and night. Yes, there is free parking...on the street if and when parking can be found. One evening and the following morning my rental vehicle was blocked when I did manage to actually park my vehicle on the property because it's single lane, so I don't recommend trying to park a vehicle on the premises. Aside from the blocked access one night, none of this stuff really bothered me because I sleep heavy and don't cook, but this place probably would be a deal breaker for most people. It was my hub for some pretty long hikes and excursions, so I was there during early and late hours of the day and night. It was awkward trying to head out for hikes at 5:00 and return at 23:00 with the floors creaking and whining every time I took a step toward and away from the room I occupied. The night prior to my departure when I retired earlier than usual I had the opportunity to meet other guests. I learned from them that this hostal is used by laborers who travel from afar within Chile to work in Pucon during the week and return to their homes each weekend. ALL the other guests were actually professional workers (teachers, administrators, clerks, etc.), and I was the only tourist on site. This evening at the hostal was a bright side of the stay. The other guests shared information about themselves, taught me a few words of Mapudungun, discussed the cultural significance of the area volcanoes, exhibited fantastic humor as well as tolerance to foreigners like me. The awkwardness of staying at Huepil was worth the couple of hours I shared with this group of gracious people. But still, I don't recommend Huepil to other visitors not from Chile. It's just not worth the hassle. I got into this bind because I reserved it in advance thinking that if I didn't crystallize a reservation in advance, I would become homeless in Pucon. This couldn't be further from reality in December. Anyone without a reservation arriving by car to Pucon will find a decent place to sleep on the...
