Hostal Licanantay — Hotel in Valparaíso

quite cheap in comparison to other hostels. central located in the main nightlife street of Valpo. Very simple breakfast. Possibly the worst and most dangerous bunk beds I've ever seen in my life, having stayed at some 100+ hostels. It's cheap quality wooden and not well constructed. Any single movement the person at the top moves the whole thing. Sleeping down, I didn't feel comfortable as the person above was quite fat and the bed could break anytime. Well, nothing happened eventually but doesn't feel safe at all. Although I booked online, when I arrived they told me they do not have availability, so they could refund my money and I should look for other place. Or they could give me another more expensive room if I pay the difference. After discussing about half an hour, they gave me the more expensive room (room for 4 people) without additional charge. Also although according to laws in Chile, foreigners do not have to pay the tax, they do charge it. Adds another 2USD to the price, not a big deal but doesn't feel nice either. The cleanliness of the hostel is not so good. Has a nice socialising room. Overall; cheap option for party animals, close to nightlife and many people stay awake till late hours in the hostel. Beware of what you can read when you are booking there. First, you cannot cancel online bookings, which would be ok if...||||The staff didn't told us when we arrived that despite being tourists we had to pay for the taxes, which we don't have to if we pay in USD. Online, it was written we could, in reception, there was an ad on the wall saying "no payment in USD". And we couldn't cancel because it was a booking. After walking 2 km from the bus station and going uphill, we realised we had to pay more than planned. Not much, but it was just we felt like we were cheated with.||||Otherwise, the hostel was not much, the kitchen was a bit run down, cleanliness was not great and there were no heaters in the rooms. I stayed there for 5 nights in total and can absolutely recommend it for laid-back, low-budget travellers! It is only 7500 Pesos for a 12-bed dorm and a pretty good breakfast including bread, cereals & sometimes a bit of cake! ||It is true that the organisation is not always 100 percent perfect and they are also doing some work like painting currently, but that's absolutely no problem as long as you're not extremely.. picky I guess. And the people working there are extremely nice, they invited me to have lunch with them more than once! ||||The panaderia just across the street is also great and cheaper than most of the others in Valparaíso! Oh, just down the street (5 min walking) are more panaderias and also shops to buy cheap & tasty vegetables and meat - no need to go to the giant supermarket a few...
