I was part of a group of seven business visitors who stayed at this hotel from 13 to 15 December 2018. Upon arrival we were greeted by an overly friendly hotel porter who placed our bags on his trolley. I prefer to take my bag with me so I went to remove it from the trolley only to get into a tug of war with an increasingly insistent porter. I finally managed to recover my bag and proceed to my room. My associates were not so lucky. Upon arrival at their rooms the porter demanded payment, extracting a total of 200 RMB (about USD 30). He also entered the bathroom whilst one of the guests was using the toilet. The guests were very upset by the demanding nature of the porter. We complained to the manager who advised that he would talk with the porter and ask him to return the money. The next day the manager said that the porter had denied taking any money and that he (the manager) could not do anything in the absence of any evidence. Really? Seven guests all independently complain that they have been subject to demands for money with menace and you suggest that there is no evidence? Sorry, but all travellers should avoid this hotel unless you want to be ripped off by a dishonest porter and...
Read moreYou can stay at the Sheraton or Crowne plaza if you want a reliable stay with a good western breakfast, but if you want something uniquely Chinese, go to this place. The Nanyang King's Gate Hotel mixes a 500 year span of different European architecture into one giant heap of gaudy goldness. Its incredibly gaudy and I kept gawking at the insane amounts of gold wallpaper, carved wood ceilings, and more and more gold leaf. I had a gigantic suite for about 1/4th the price of the Sheraton. This place is about 10 minutes to the metro station by foot, or you can take a taxi directly into Tianhe Cheng for around 4-5usd.||||As far as the quality of the stay, the hotel was very quiet at night and the king bed was fantastic. My room had only an Ethernet plug but I carry a mini travel router with me so I just plugged it in for free wifi. I didn't pay for Wifi, apparently some people did? Just make sure it says free when you book. At $50, I got a hell of a deal.||||Morning breakfast buffet was not bad too. Its Chinese with some other stuff but really couldn't complain because it was free. One of the factory guys who came for breakfast seemed...
Read moreThis hotel is quite a distance from the centre of Guangzhou and little English is spoken or understood in the area. The hotel was impressive (we had upgraded rooms) which armchairs of red velvet and gilt which were like thrones. The bed was huge but very hard/firm. The stall put an extra couple of quilts under my bottom sheet to soften it for me. Lovely big room. Bathroom was extraordinary. Big Jacuzzi and separate shower cubicle which a drench shower, flexible shower and body jets. It could also be used as a personal steam room. The breakfast was an interesting mix of almost western and Chinese. Staff were lovely and wanted to help. The bits and pieces in the bathroom were more than sufficient and were replenished fully every day. You cannot buy shower gel! Take your own. Bath gel and everything else including toothbrush and paste is there. Water was supplied in the room everyday (bottled) and we had a fridge. I would stay there again. Just have a picture of where you want to go to show the taxi driver. Long trip to and from the airport but taxis are really cheap. 200 yuan each way approx. ...
