My family and I stayed here. Our room had two separate rooms which was great to be able to keep my space separate from my kids. The staff was very friendly and they all speak English well. There is a menu that you can choose from for meals which was convenient for the times we did not want to go out and search. There is also a list of local businesses that This Old Place works with to provide tours and services for the guests. We used this to rent e-bikes as well as take a few tours. It was very convenient and I found it to be more cost-effective than scheduling all the attractions on my own. Just be aware that these are not personal, catered to you specifically tours. You will see the same things but if you want those you will pay a pretty penny for them. ||||I often like to stay in hostels due to the chance to met and mingle with people from other places. There were some opportunities that the hostel provides for such encounters but did not have them when I was there due to remodeling construction. The location was also amazing. It was within walking distance to a serene park and had a few food choices close by. The biggest win for this hostel is great service at a reasonable price. Don't expect 5 star mints with little towel animals placed on your made bed each night. It is still a hostel. However, for the price the people are friendly and the service is great. ||||One last thing. There is a 100 kuai deposit that must be made in cash. It is required at most hotels in China. I forgot about it and we had to go to the bank. The closest bank is as you turn right onto the main street and not over the bridge. The bank over the bridge is much...
Read moreWe started our China tour by taking the high speed train from Shenzhen North train station to Guilin North train station, a 3 hour trip on the very modern and efficient bullet train that is easily accessed by the Hong Kong MTR system. A 20 minute bus ride delivered our family to the Li River Scenic Area, the main tourist center of Guilin, where the hostel is located on a quiet side street just a block from the lakes and river area with all the shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. The hostel is bright and cozy, very well set up with clean and comfortable rooms and fully tiled modern bathrooms with plenty of hot water. The staff speaks English and were very helpful. We spent three nights there and will definitely stay again the next time we...
Read moreThe hostel is excellently located by the lakes. We booked a standard twin room which was basic but well proportioned. We upgraded to a room at the front, but the view was not worth it as it was obscured by trees, etc. However, the hostel has a roof top terrace which is excellent and has super views. The hostel offers good quality food and drink too. They do laundry or you can do it yourself. For a hostel, I thought it was excellent.||||The only issue we had was with the taxi that brought us to the wrong port for the River Li cruise. We do not know if it was the hostel or the driver that got the venue wrong. Luckily we received help and made it to the other port in time to...
