We are a couple who stayed here for 3 nights, from 30 October-2 November. ||||The guesthouse is in an historic house centred around a courtyard. The courtyard has character, and the carved furniture in the bedroom is nice. The hot water system works well. The manager speaks English, and she was very helpful in ringing the hotel at our next destination and in arranging local transport for us to temples and to the high speed rail station. The traditional bed was comfortable, with distinctive wheat pillows (last week one couple bought four of them). The meals we had at dinner were nice, and reasonably priced. ||||Nonetheless, we were disappointed in our stay. We ordered a suite (not a standard room) but our room was small and cramped for anyone with a suitcase (couples have one each). The bathroom was tiny, with a toilet, shower and wash basin all squeezed into an area of 2-3sqm. The shower has no curtain, so nearly all the floor gets wet whenever you shower. The ceiling fan Is not very effective, with the whole room left in steam after showering (e.g. my hairspray can became moist all over). There is no safe in the room, nor in reception. The breakfast is basic and is an added charge. ||||This accommodation cost us more than the 4 star Garden Hotel in Datong, which is far better 😮||||There are 2 Harmony hotels/guesthouses in Pingyao, both in the walled city and sharing the same website, so check carefully which location you...

Read moreIt's safe to say this was the best hotel in China so far (and I've been to many cities). They offer a free pickup service to and from the city gate, from where you can easily reach the train station using a taxi (around 20 RMB). The hotel is located in the center of the ancient city, which really boosts the great vibe it gives. The hotel buildings are very old but in fantastic shape (like built yesterday). It really feels amazing just walking to your room through the country yard. The whole staff was fluent in English and extremely welcoming and generous. The room itself was very spacious and tremendously clean. It had all amenities needed like a heating and cooling AC, exclusive wifi router. The bath had extra shoes and even a hairdryer. We got fresh toothbrushes and toothpaste. The bath tub is also amazing and the rain shower has great temperature (which is important to me, as I don't like fiddling with the water mixer). If you plan to stay in Pingyao (ancient city) I can wholeheartedly recommend this place and will definitely book it again for my next...
