Pingyao is a destination for Chinese tourists, less so for foreigners. It's especially quiet and untouristy in the cold, damp days of December. And staying at Jing's Residence makes very much worth a two or three-day visit.|| Jing's Residence is the most interesting and welcoming place we've ever stayed in China. It's a "boutique" hotel in all the most positive uses of the word. It's magical how the ancient outside-facing walls and doors take you back in time. But open a door! Simplicity, beauty, efficiency, tranquility, warmth of hospitality and of temperature. Our room was an oasis. Firm comfortable bed, great shower, beautifully yet simply decorated walls. We appreciated and occasionally used the extra free-standing heater. I kept the free-standing air purifier on low because sometimes outside air held the not-unpleasant scent of the coal that Pingyao residents use to heat their homes. Both appliances were welcome, although not particularly necessary.|| The breakfast staff were friendly, quiet, and so perfect for those times when you have just woken up, love to see a smiling face but aren’t yet ready to engage in conversation. We enjoyed the full breakfast the first day, and the variety of a la carte dishes on later days.|| We ate in the hotel our first evening. First, snack and cocktails--alcoholic and not--upstairs in the library where we read book and surfed the web. We didn't take advantage of movies we could have chosen to watch from comfortable couches and the wide screen.|| The staff was wonderful. When you are in a mood for conversation, Imam was always glad to answer questions and provide as little or as much as you want. One morning after breakfast, I was in particularly curious mood and Iman and I had a long and very informative and enjoyable conversation. || I also recommend getting a massage. One of...

Read moreThis was a fabulous hotel in a traditional building with the rooms set around various internal courtyards. Although the building was traditional on the outside the interior had been modernized in a very sympathetic way. The staff were really welcoming and friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. They serve complimentary tea and cake in the late afternoon which was very welcome after a day out. |The room was a good size with the most comfortable bed we had during our 3 week trip to China. It was very clean.|The hotel is right in the old town so you can walk everywhere in the old town and within the walls and get to all the tourist attractions easily from it.|There is a menu for breakfast with a choice of items, some Chinese and some Western. All was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. |This is a great Boutique hotel and a wonderful place to stay in Pingyao. |Also we went to see the immersive play Another Glance at Pingyao which our guide recommended. Although it was performed all in Chinese (which we don’t speak) our guide had explained to us all the scenes so we were able to follow what was happening. It’s an amazing experience with some great special effects and we would highly recommend it. The building it’s performed in is just outside the old city walls and is...
