This simple, but beautifully realised homestead-style guest house, with just four rooms, is a fairly new addition to the burgeoning development of Palomino, on the north-west Caribbean coast in Colombia.||A family-run operation, headed up by Marcela Arteaga-Giraldo, it has opened in the last two years.||It boasts great, clean, airy double rooms with extremely comfortable beds. ||Those rooms might need the odd finishing touch, such as bedside lights being fitted, but you'll get a fine night's sleep, even though the cockerels crowing on neighbouring properties will try their best to give you a rude awakening at 5am!.||The rooms are in a covered terrace line, each with their own colourful hammock strung between posts outside.||This leads to the central area, where good, simple food is prepared in the kitchen, around which can be found a lounge area (with TV and games to while away the time) and dining tables at which to enjoy meals al-fresco.||The small reception area is here too, where a safe is available for your use.||On one of the less developed, sandy streets of the village, it is however just a quick walk into the centre of things on the beach, which offers a good range of bars and restaurants for sundowners.||Kallpa (Quecha for “strength”) is a charming, small, very comfortable guest house run by a lovely, friendly team. ||And, at $100,000 COP (£30) for a double-room (including breakfast), the price is also very reasonable.||And, because Marcela has a penchant for caring for sick or injured animals, don’t be surprised if a puppy is being nursed back to health or there’s a rescued kitten dancing around your feet as you relax on...
Read moreI stayed in Kallpa for nearly three weeks. From the beginning, Marcela and everyone working there was warm, extremely helpful, and accomodating. The hostel is well located and within close walking distance to the beach and all the main restaurants. Another plus to its location is that it is on the newer side of Palomino, so it is quieter and in the evenings making it great for quiet and relaxing nights. Being central to everything from beaches, restaurants, moto taxis, and tours is HUGE perk.
One of my favorite parts of my stay at Kallpa was the included breakfast. The menu changed everyday and juices are what ever is in season. The hostel has a full restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The solar panels are HUGE plus, so no matter what the weather is rain or shine, or even perhaps a common Palomino power blackout, Kallpa is open and all amenities are...
Read moreI cannot say enough good things about this place and the owner. We had run into a ton of bad luck until we showed up at this hostel. It's clean, quiet, beautiful, peaceful, and in a great location. The food is fresh and cooked right in front of you. They offer water refills which was convenient and cost effective. That's not all... The owner is incredibly kind and helpful. Ask her for advice about Palomino and she'll tell you everything from where to eat to what to do. She speaks wonderful english if Spanish is challenging for you and seems genuinely happy to help everyone she can. There are usually dogs and cats lounging in the sun in the common area, all of which are taken care of by her (clean and loving animals). Don't waste your time in another hostel... This is...
