Decent villas incl. a beautiful view apart the sun bed warriors and extra charges for beach sun beds and parasols
It’s happening again. Queuing up at 7:50 AM as the pool opens at 8 AM. From your lovely terrace with a beautiful view, you can see the this special kind of humans, sun bed warriors. Not embarrassed at all, sharp 8 AM, this species conquers the pool to reserve THEIR sun bed(s) and parasol(s). Once conquered, it is time to do the 2nd priority tasks. Hygiene, breakfast maybe a city trip to Dubrovnik, leaving the well reserved sun beds and parasol is unattended for hours. Our son, he is 5, was even asking why people would do that!?
Recommendation by the reception / service desk: Put the towels of reserved sun beds aside! Well, I think that’s probably the right thing to do, but remember, we are talking about sun bed warriors. These species is fighting for their sun bed reservation freedom. We don’t want to promote escalation nor physical argumentation, so we should leave it to the pool team.
Here some recos which worked perfect in other hotels:
Signs that make clear sun bed reservations are not tolerated. Collect towels that are placed for reserving sun bed. Even better, only use special towels, given out by the service team at the pool. Pool boys can actually work: let them give out the towels for the sun beds as well as parasols. When guests are going away, collect towels and parasols. Don‘t charge extra for sun beds and parasols at the beach. Hotel guests are required to pay 7€ per per sun bed and 6€ per parasol. I let you do the math, when 2 adults with their kid(s) are staying for 10 days. Guests are paying to stay with you and to enjoy the hotel pool and hotel beach. Guests from outside can of course be charged. But your own hotel guests? Try to make money with service. Such as placing QR-Codes for your food and beverage orders at the beach. (Smart, huh?) The villas, they are nice but obviously have their price, should minimum include sun beds, not? No idea how to identify/distinguish guests, guests from outside or guest staying at villas? How about a colored rubber bracelets? I know, it can be super easy. Last but not least… When building new facilities, increasing the beds to accommodate more guests, think about spots at pools and beach. Especially since you are promoting the pool and hotel own beach. But hey…. I forgot, the beach has to be paid extra! ;) and whoops, this area is a summer vacation place. What do we do in summer at the beach? ;-) I know… it is a tough guess…
@hotelmanagement: sun bed warriors downgrade hotels, their reputation and the entire experience. It is embarrassing!
Positives (+): We stayed at the beach front view villa. View is amazing! Room size is ok for 3, max 4 people. Reception staff is friendly, caring and tries to help within their range of possibilities. Kira was very good in deescalating when I addressed the sun bed warrior issue. Room service was discrete and good. They also washed the dishes, which is definitely not their job, but the t was well noted. Maybe it was because of tipping in the beginning? ;) Fridge works and was clean. Small kitchen with 2 stove plates offers everything for self service. Air con, shower, hot water, etc. works fine. Most places are in walking distances.
Negatives (-): Sun bed warriors at the pool. Not sufficient parasols at the pool. Really bad when you travel with small kids. Extra charges for sun beds and parasols at the beach. (The beach belongs to the 2 Maistra hotels and the Maistra villas that offer their guests a shared pool experience and area with insufficient sun beds) Initial hotel, the Astarea, urgently requires a make over! It is definitely outdated compared to the Mlini Select Hotel and the Villas.
Wrapping it up… It definitely offers room for improvement but still is worth a stay in the beach front villas. We had a good time during our stay, even thought the sun bed warriors frustrated us every...
Read moreStayed for 4 nights, with jet2 holidays. After signing in, we were given a little golf buggy ride which wasn't far at all but felt like we were already being treated like royalty, with a very happy chatty driver. We were given the most amazing apartment, facing out across the bay. Nestled next to an olive tree, the setting was incredible. The apartment had 2 single beds in one bedroom & large sofa bed in the open plan. We didnt mind sleeping in singles. A glorious powerful shower, and various free things to use such shower caps, shampoo. Theres even a shaving kit & toothbrush with a tube of paste. Room service put fresh towels every day after they have cleaned and made the beds. Both the bedroom & kitchen area have French doors to a balcony with table, chairs & a pair of sun loungers & a clothes airer. The kitchen has an electric hob & pans with utensils and the like. A kettle, various flavour teas and coffee as you can expect from a room. There's also a fridge which had a welcome gift of a fancy bottle of water. All In all, a very loaded little pad, not to mention free WiFi, large tv, robes, slippers & even a shoe horn!
We stayed from 8th to the 12th October & the sunsets were amazing to see every evening as we sat on the balcony. The sun hits perfectly in the early afternoon when we were there so make sure you have a bottle of wine ready! The morning was just as lovely, with a wash of pink still in the sky with a almost full moon, we hit the jackpot with this one! Theres a set of steps that goes to a rocky pool into the sea, I must exercise a word of caution as its rather steep & not advised for anyone that cannot balance whilst traversing rocks.
There is a beach that has pebbles & sand in part just a minute walk around the way with better access with loungers that can be rented from reception. We choose to dip in here briefly as we passed by heading to the shops. What is wonderful we found is fish swim around you in the gentle crystal clear water making it ideal for snorkeling. Theres also an abundance of various small bits of gorgeous sea glass if you enjoy collecting little things from the beach.
Unfortunately, we never tried the hotel restaurant for dining so cannot comment on that. We did however, take full advantage of the indoor spa facilities that is included. Theres a well equipped gym, pool and saunas, ladies & gentlemen changing rooms with lockers with keys. The saunas were perfect & everywhere is clean & the pool was heated and not overly busy when we dipped in around 5pm. Free towels handed to you as you come in. Very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with water fountains and free drinks available.
We didnt try the outdoor pool, but it seemed popular as we stood and admired the views of the sea in the background. The grounds of the hotels are spotless and very neat & well kept, the plants & shrubs were in flowering & fruiting mode which made it look very tropical. Theres the odd grasshopper & sparrow, even a few bats early on in the evening too. The staff throughout are so friendly & happy to help. We asked about the public bus to Dubrovnik & had to walk up a short steep hill, not for the weak knees or very elderly. Also the bus can get busy so be prepared to stand holding a rail, it has to be said that on alot of occasions, locals & younger folk will offer their seats to ladies & elderly. Theres also a boat taxi too which we didnt try however.
We would definitely return again, everything was wonderful. The apartment, facilities & staff were amazing, the setting was incredible & I would say I had the most perfect holiday. It was sad to arrive...
Read moreI travelled with my husband and 15 yr old daughter. |We stayed at the Maistra Select Villa in mid- July 2025. Lots of positives, including: |clean and well- kept grounds.|very clean apartment |fabulous sea views |modern facilities including a gym and lovely indoor pool|beautiful resort | friendly/ helpful staff ||The hotel and villas are set within quite large grounds that involves lots of walking and climbing up and down steps. This was fine for us but wouldn’t be suitable for anyone with mobility issues or a visual impairment. ||At the start of our visit, the situation with the sun loungers was ridiculous. If you wanted to sit by the pool then you had no choice but to queue and wait for the pool to open at 8am. Lots of guests would then claim prime sun loungers with their towels and then not return until much later in the day. Anyone coming later than 8am didn’t stand a chance. Fortunately the hotel didn’t tolerate this for long and implemented a new policy that stated that any towels that were left longer than 30 mins on an un- occupied lounger would be removed. The pool attendants did a great job of checking the loungers and lifting any towels that were left for too long. This was implemented every day and instantly resolved the problem. | |The pool area itself was very clean and well organised. Unfortunately the cost of sun loungers at the beach prevented us from spending much time there. 38 Euros per day for three sun loungers and a parasol over a ten day period was too much for us. | Breakfast in the hotel was pretty standard but did get very busy after 0830.| |We were happy with our villa although we did find it to be a bit small. Shower and air con worked well. The fridge and kettle were handy too. Everything felt modern and clean. ||Overall, Mlini is a great resort for a relaxing holiday. We would definitely return to Croatia although we did find it to be more expensive than other recent holidays to other places in the...
