Valtice is probably off the tourist track for most people not bearing Czech or Austrian citizenship, but there are many things to recommend it (hopefully it remains somewhat remote cuz the charm will certainly suffer if it turns into Cesky Krumlov). One of those things is Penzion Prinz. The rooms are clean, modern and in some cases airy and light. Our rooms had thoroughly modern bathrooms, one with a tub/shower combo. We had two rooms because there were no triples, but in both rooms we were quite satisfied. They provide parking in a secure area (not that there is any crime) and keys to enter and exit the building. Because it is a family run business they are not at the desk all night, so if you arrive late you may need to call. The business end is on the 2nd floor (American 2nd floor), with rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors, no elevator. Breakfast is large and diverse, including homemade jams. We commented on the deliciousness of the jams and they gave us a jar to take! You are literally 50 meters from the square and two minutes walk from the castle. We were given recommendations for several restaurants, one of which served a divine duck breast for about $7 (Albero or Alberto, something like that, across the street from the Penzion with a garden restaurant attached in the back of the main restaurant... it is not one of the ones right on the main square). The newly opened wine bar, in a conspicuously modern building, is right up the hill on the road coming into or out of town (direction of Breclav) and is also two minutes walk on the left side of the road, opposite direction from the square. Excellent tastings there of local wines accompanied by cheeses in an outdoor garden setting. When we checked into the Penzion the woman helping us did not speak English. She may speak some other languages besides Czech, but we can pull a couple hundred Czech words and were able to communicate. At breakfast a different woman spoke to us in Czech, but she seemed to have some English abilities. I would not let not being able to communicate in Czech be a deal breaker, though. They will work through the language barriers, and they are exceptionally kind and helpful and take all major credit cards. This part of the country, being somewhat more remote, is less multi-lingual even in the "touristy" spots than Prague and the areas in and around the capital. But...
Read moreThe hotel is very nice, it is just at the main square. Rooms are cosy and well-equiped (there is a fridge and an air conditioner in the room, which is very useful), beds are comfortable, in a bathroom you have all basic cosmetics and a hair-dryer. The hotel has a parking, which is closed at night, so you can leave your car safely. Breakfast is tasty and diverse, everyone should be satisfied. Service is very nice and friendly, but here I have to write something on a sour note. In the hotel almost nobody speaks any other language but Czech. Even though they do their best to communicate, they fail by more complex matters as well as if there is any problem, you will probably be unable to inform them about it if you don't speak Czech. Another quite annoying matter concerning the service is the fact that they keep ignoring "Please, do not disturb" sign and come into your room even if you don't want to (and again, if you don't speak Czech, you will be unable to tell them that you don't like it). I can recommend the hotel in general, but the two above problems disqualify it as the one with...
Read moreThis is a lovely place to stay in Valtice, and is open all year round, although Valtice is busiest in the high summer season. The rooms are all on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and very comfortably and tastefully furnished in the modern Czech style with en-suite bathrooms, TV, and wifi. There is also a closed car park. The breakfast is served on the terrace in summer and is opulent, with far more than a normal mortal can eat!||Although central (just at the start of the main town square), the Prinz is not noisy to stay in, as there is no direct hustle and bustle from the street bars and cafes. Excellent value for money. This is my second stay and I am hoping to come back soon! There is a seminar room on the ground floor that would also make the Prinz suitable for small business or...
