Sokos Solo Torni in Tampere was decently located near the central train station; once you cut through the tunnel, you were already in the town center and the main road Hameenkatu. It’s a high rise – I believe the tallest hotel in Tampere with 25 floors – but used the old train museum for its frontage, which made it unique. ||The reception staff are friendly and efficient – they executed our early-morning breakfast-to-go request speedily. The hallway corridor walls, carpet, and guest room doors are boldly (and nicely) designed. The bold Finnish (?) design is carried over into the walls of the guest rooms. We had a corner room so we had a 180 degree view – although we wished the two windows were wider. Other positives - there was good accent lighting, including a drop ceiling with recessed lights; the work table was long and there was an extra emergency seat to augment the regular ergo chair; the sofa was large and comfortable; effective blackout curtains; and they had a Nespresso-type machine. One major negative - the shower stall was so small – only about 26 inches on each side so it was very difficult to turn in any direction; also, the shower glass door was about two inches off the floor so a lot of shower water sprayed into the main T&B area. Also, the washbasin floor was just three inches lower than the counter so water tended to splash back a bit. ||On the 25th floor is the Moro sky deck, which also has a bar (guests have complimentary welcome drinks BTW) and so many chairs and sofas to choose from; the deck offers unrivalled views of the entire city and its suburbs (did I say it was the tallest...
Read moreAhh, taking a bath above all rooftops in Tampere. This is a really good 4-star hotel with stunning views and a five star service. Forgot something or need an hdmi cable or an infuser for your loose tea? The reception will not hesitate to ask around and bring you one from the premises. Cleaning has done some marvels: rumour has it some parties have been thrown in the big suites by people who thought they were kings but were in fact pigs, but everything smells and looks clean; blacklight revealed no stains. Check behind your telly though, cleaning is really swift and might miss a spot or too, especially if you want to move the telly to plug in an hdmi you just asked for. Restaurant and room service is ok priced and the menu is small but really versatile, used to accommodate gluten free and vegan options. The room prices will look like a killer stabbing you in the wallet but if it's not season you might be in luck and maybe you'll find that the view is worth it alone. Don't forget to ask if you want a bathtub room, most have showers. Now then, if they only added a hotel piano to...
Read moreAn excellent experience for a pre-christmas weekend visit for a second year in a row! Excellent service from the staff, both the hotel and the restaurant. Food was excellent; both dinner and breakfast. Bed was cosy and the design of the room was pleasing as well. I personally enjoyed the raw concrete surface texture combined with modern interior textures and furniture. Sadly the weather was a little foggy on the first day, so the view from the 21st floor was limited, but it opened up the next day. The view to the lake Näsijärvi was wonderful despite the cloudy weather. The only negative observation was the lack of Covid-limitations by the people in the Moro-bar on the top floor. There were a lot of people seemingly partying without any worries about Covid which left me with a feeling of not wanting to be there. The 1st floor bar on the other hand had lots of room and had excellent drinks! Try the cloudberry and cranberry (lakka & karpalo) drink if you wtop by! Will definately be back...
