We stayed at this beautiful restored home in Fougeres based on the location of the home in the old part of town just a minute from the entrance of the Chateau de Fougeres (like a mini-Carcassonne). Fougeres does NOT appear in the Lonely Planet "France" guidebook and we had never heard of the Chateau de Fougeres - but were going to take a risk because we needed a base for our plans to visit Mont St. Michel....||||WHAT AN AWESOME STAY!!!||||Veronique met us at the front door, was very kind and attentive and explained all about the house and the town. We stayed in the ground floor apartment, which had been recently renovated, was clean and had LOTS of room, nice kitchen, huge spaces to hang out and our family of 5 easily fit. The kitchen had basic-plus cooking utensils, pots, pans, substantial pantry items, big frigde and was fun to cook a very nice, complete meal in.||||The ONLY negative was that there is no clothes dryer - only a clothes washer and it was cold enough that our clothes just didn't dry in the open air in the apartment (maybe in summer). But there is an automatic laudromat (rue de fautieres) in the 'hood - No prob. (and, it turns out Veronique said in certain instances she would allow the use of her own dryer for renter's drying needs).||||And the house IS literally 2 minutes from the entrance of the Absolutely Gorgeous, Totally-Well-Preserved Chateau de Fougeres (which IS like a mini-Carcassonne, only with a working moat as well!!), as well as 1 minute from the beautiful eglise St. Leonard (beautiful 14th century church), the gorgeous Old Town of Fougeres (complete with stream beautifully meandering through the middle of the town) and the equally gorgeous eglise St. Sulpice. But more than that...the Old Town of Fougeres is very beautiful...with a large terraced park, clean, wonderful old buildings, restaurants (many creperies) and shops...and it is 1/2 an hour from Mont St. Michel,..with almost NONE of the tourist swamp/glut that you encounter at MtStM. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this as a base for your Mont St. Michel trip BUT caution you that you will be tempted to jettison the Mont St. MIchel part of the trip and just hang out...
Read moreWe found this B and B last summer and were so impressed at the hospitable welcome as well as the great value that we returned this year on our way to Cherbourg for the ferry to Poole. ||Véronique is a charming and bubbly hostess, making one feel relaxed and welcome from the start. The bedrooms have been redecorated and upgraded for this year. Our en suite double was very tastefully decorated and the furnishings and fittings attractive, functional and comfortable. The shower room and toilet was cleverly designed and with excellent fittings. The whole would put many a more expensive hotel to shame. Our daughter and her partner shared a room nearby, with toilet and shower next door in a semi private area off the main corridor, which was absolutely fine.||Continental breakfast is offered in a large and homely kitchen and is not to be missed, whilst Veronique provides home made jams and preserves along with croissants, bread, fresh fruit, cake, fruit juices and endless coffee or tea. It all seems very family-like.||Overall The hotel offers simple but good quality accommodation in a fascinating building, offering a bargain well above its price. Highly recommended, either as a stopover, or for a longer stay- ideal if you are on a tight budget. ||Thank...
Read moreI've stayed in several dozen Chambre d'Hotes (b&b) in France over the past 20 years and this was the most warm, welcoming, and comfortable stay I've ever had! Veronique and Claude are consummate hosts. They joined me each morning for breakfast, introduced me to other guests, helped me with questions about my bicycle route (I was riding my bicycle across northern France.) Veronique, of course, gave me the option of taking my breakfast alone in my room but I was grateful for the offer of a little company. The room was spacious & quite comfortable. The bed was perfect and Veronique had thought of many things that made my stay even more comfortable (instant coffee in the room, access to the fridge & small kitchen, tea, even a few cookies to snack on before bed.) Breakfast was wonderful with a variety of home made jams that Veronique had made personally. The location in Fougeres is really excellent. It's right in the center of town so everything you'd need is within a few minutes walk. I feel blessed to have tripped across Lariboisiere for my trek across France and am grateful to have spent a little time with Veronique and Claude. I may build a trip around a visit to Fougeres simply so I can...
