Or maybe more than small flaws, depending on your point of view.||||The Hotel Kastel might have gotten another star from us if it were not for the fact that the shower in our room only intermittenly had hot water! In fact it never got hotter than a bit more than lukewarm. We were on the next to top floor and no one else, I see, has complained about this, so I guess it's down to a single anomoly. When we questioned the reception about it, they told us that it was probably because the hot water was low due to the fact that so many others had already taken showers! So, one is suppose to race for a shower first thing in the morning or not have hot water? The hotel was not even full. In any case, as I say, the hot water situation didn't get much better later in the day. We liked the room, didn't feel like moving again after unpacking and I simply put up with lukewarm water (my wife could shower every day at the nearby thalassotherapie center were she was going for daily treatment.) But if a real hot water shower is important for you, be sure your room has hot water.||||That said, just about everything else about the place was really first class. The rooms are quite large for a typical French hotel, they were extremely clean and the cleaning people, reception and all but one waiter were very, very friendly, professional and helpful.||||We were here on demi-pension and found the meals, for the most part to be reasonably good. Not super good, but good, nonetheless. In fact, we discovered a restaurant in the Hotel du Bac in the Saint Marine neighborhood of Benodet (see our review elsewhere) that was better, though a bit more expensive. The staff in the restaurant were, with the exception of one, very professional, courteous and attentive. ||||The last attribute cannot at all times be attributed to Gary (spelling?) who amused himself on two different days by spending ten minutes or so chatting up and cracking jokes to a group of young women sitting nearby. We waited for our coffee during this time, after asking that he please bring it with dessert. The dessert arrived but Gary then deserted us for his next turn at the ladies, who were, one must admit, quite amused. We weren't. The coffee arrived when he jolly well got ready to bring it, AFTER he had finished with his entertaining. We're an old couple, but certainly not prudes. So if the waiter wants to flirt with some young women, we have no problem with that at all. But don't do it when your other diners are waiting, Gary.||||He began to pull the same stunt the following day. When we this time reminded him that we were waiting for our coffee (still a while after dessert had been placed on our table), he brought it to us and laid it brusquely on the table in something of a small huff and without a word to us. You know, like sorry to keep you waiting, or sorry, I forgot. ||||If you care to read any of my other reviews, you will see nary a word about poor service elsewhere. So I'm not the kind to normally complain, but Gary's inattention was pretty flagrant. Perhaps he's usually a lot more professional and he just couldn't help himself with these ladies. But he needs to learn to put work before pleasure, especially because those three ladies were not the only ones paying for his services.||||But, all that is a shame because the other waiters, waitress, people who helped with breakfast, the ladies at the reception and the ladies who cleaned our room were all, as I say, completely professional and perfectly delightful. So don't let my comments about Gary influence you in any way about the hotel. We're just getting it off our chests!||||The hotel is nicely situated across the street from the beach and reasonably quiet at night (at least while we were there.) The town of Benodet, by the way, is quite nice and near a lot of other...
Read moreWe stayed in the hotel for 5 nights overlapping "the Belle Plaisance" days (this year from June 26 till June 29). This is a sailing event in Bénodet and includes a competition for older - wooden sailing boats too. Nice to watch the yachts leaving and entering the harbour and very relaxing to look at late afternoon with a nice sun set.||The hotel offers no appealing view on the outside, but the inside is surprizingly fresh and attractive and recently renovated so it seems. ||Rooms are nice and practical with enough storage capacity in ours (301). You have a nice view over the harbour and the ocean but the view is partly obstructed by some high trees on the other side of the street. We think this might be worse in the other rooms with seaview.||Personnel at reception was kind and they contacted room service to check if our room was already available since we arrived early. It was ! ||Personnel in the restaurant was very friendly too but we think there were 2 new trainees helping and these made a few basic errors (like bringing no bread or butter, forgetting to bring knife and fork, not remembering was plates are for which table, ...). All minor things but somewhat annoying if there are too many. But they made up a lot through their friendliness.||Breakfast is of good quality and in buffet form. A nice selection for French standards.||Evening meals were with table service. We had a few times basic products, but of good quality and with a modern look. And at 2 evenings we were really treated with some exceptionally good plates. Wine prices vary a lot, but they also have some affordable bottles of good quality. And they put the remainder of your bottle aside for the next day. ||I consider this a very good 3-star hotel, but with one important remark that should be communicated more openly by management. The hotel has a lift, but it does not stop on floor level 3. Also, you need to take some 5 steps (on every other floor) before you can access the lift.||This could cause a serious burden for people with limited mobility and should be known in advance. See in this respect also further room tips.||If you think this evaluation was usefull, please let it know by giving it your usefull...
Read morewe have been coming to this hotel for some years and it has failed to keep up with the times. we no longer dine at the hotel. the menu is unchanged from what we had when we first stayed here, and the menu is very limited as it is. this is not a problem because there are some excellent restaurants nearby, in particular we can recommend la vague some five minutes away. plenty of choice and food quality exceptional. the rooms are adequate albeit very basic, we have had much nicer rooms in less expensive hotels. no in room bar/fridge. there is a bottle of water in the room on arrival however, that is not replaced the next day. i asked for a bottle of water the following day and although it was placed in our room, we found a hefty charge for it on our bill upon check out. breakfast is adequate but getting tea or coffee is a bind, they have boiling water in pressurised containers, you have to put a teapot with your choice of tea (plenty of choice) in the pot and press the button on the container which releases a dose of boiling water. quite a hassle. my view is that it would be a lot simpler if they followed the routine of most every other hotel we have been to and just have the waiter/waitress bring you your coffee, tea or chocolate to the table. this would not stop us going back, however, given the choice of cafes and restaurants now abounding in benodet we would probably skip breakfast at the hotel, which is not cheap at 17 euros each, and rather have something light at one of the many cafes on...
