Why do you pay 400€ per night for a hotel room ? You expect comfort, service, location and a bit of indulgence. The Bachmair falls short in too many areas.
Why do you book a 400€ room in a Starwood property ? Because you want to enjoy the benefits of your SPG status (Platinum in our case) and a certain consistency in quality of service. Bachmair fell way short.
To address the second point: no SPG status recognition at checkin, no room upgrade in spite of plenty of availability. Room was dark, no view, and had the distinct feel of a 3* business hotel (bathroom in particular) spruced up with a couple of touchy feely amenities. Not a good start.
Then there is the WiFi issue. Arriving in the room, i tried to get us connected. No signal. 0 bar, sometimes 1. Tried 4 devices including a laptop, even the hotel room tablet does not work. Called reception, "we'll send you someone". That someone never came. Called again after 30 minutes, no answer. Called again, got a pick up/hang up. We stop at the reception to ask again, the same lady i spoke to feigns to have no clue what i am talking about, says i need to login. I remind her there is no signal, she disappears behind the front desk for a few minutes, and comes back with a power line extension access point and hands to me. I asked her to kindly have it setup in our room while we are out for dinner. Shes says she can't leave the reception (obviously she did earlier since nobody was picking up the phone). We found the power line access point on the floor in our room, connected to our socket, it was working, but bandwidth was - as one would expect - tragic. WiFi was not just an issue in our room, it was borderline unusable in the center of the property, by the "river pond". It did work fine in the breakfast pavillion though.
Then there is the kids. An invasion of young families with small infants. Loud, cranky kids at breakfast, loud in the corridors, loud in the rooms. Kids everywhere. Tegernsee might be a destination of choice of the Munich crowd who need a break but can't travel far. So you get lots of them, and it just spoils everything. Hotels can't expect couples to "share" that kind of enjoyment. Just like an increasing number of properties are splitting pools between kids and adults only, the same has to be done with breakfast areas. I don't go on vacation to have my breakfast quiet reading time spoiled by a screaming baby. We had that both mornings.
Breakfast itself was pretty decent, with a nice buffet. Quality ingredients with good presentation. Coffee was awful according to my wife. A large array of teas, but oddly no english breakfast tea. Who drinks Earl Grey for breakfast ?
Then we need to talk about location. Tegernsee is pretty, but the Bachmair is not by Tegernsee, it is a solid 20 minutes walk from the lake (not a bad walk, we did it twice for dinner), and sits at the crossroads of two busy streets. The layout of the hotel was cleverly done with a large inner yard split by a small river. A nice lawn, lounge chairs, the place looks nice to enjoy the evening sun (when the kids have been summoned back to their rooms). The river has an odd pool that was filled with algae, I would not have wanted to swim in it. You can see the mountains above the buildings.
In other miscs: Beds are small with tiny duvets, maybe this gets changed depending on the season. Bachmair includes daily use of the minibar content, free refill. Mineral watter, a coke, a beer, a schorle. A nice attention. Underground parking is 15€, otherwise you can get free access to the nearby outdoor parking
Upon checkout, the reception clerk just processed our invoice and charged my credit card without asking whether we had enjoyed our stay. Odd, quite symptomatic of a certain service mindset, and the answer would have been negative. Bachmair falls short in...
Read moreTo be honest, my expectations were not too high when we checked in at the Bachmaier Weissach for an autumn holiday, a hotel in Tegernsee that is not by the lake, but instead sits right next to a rather busy road. But how I was wrong.
The mix of Bayrisch cosines and Japanese minimalism is done just perfect here. When you are first inside the door, you are in a different world. The always friendly and professional staff is a big part of this. But also the very nice spa and pools, the excellent breakfast and a Japanese restaurant that serves the best Japanese food you will find in Southern Germany. The Japanese bar (adults only) is a peaceful and very cozy place to end your day with one of their tasty cocktails.
This year’s addition, the Tegernsee Phantastisch, is nothing short of amazing. The Weissach Warrior, the parkour track, the trampolines and the virtual reality games will keep both kids and adults busy for hours, but there is also an educational part teaching about nature and the area.
Combine this with a hiking trip on the nearby mountain, a bike trip and a sailing trip on the lake, and this easily the becomes the best holiday with children, that you have had for a very long time.
Worth mentioning is also the rather busy and very good kids club. But also the Club House on the lake, take the ferry here, enjoy a remarkable good lunch, and then ferry back to the hotel, pure bliss for the soul.
All together a great experience, that an independent hotel in Southern Germany can delivery this kind of service and comfort is really rather impressive, that takes some vision and also deep pockets. So well done Bachmaier-Weissach, we will...
Read moreThis place is completely overrated! The decoration and environment are magnificent but the rest makes you think of a journey at Camping Paradise. An excessively expensive hotel and no corresponding service. At no time I saw a manager. All the staff runs out of time in every direction to deal with the customer who pays a very high price but doesn’t recieve the service that matches the price. I thougt I was dreaming when in the evening in the bar little children were running around, the porter crossed the bar with a basket of luggage and the waitress passed by with a cart full with dirty dishes, all of this at 8pm in the bar where you want to enjoy a drink and relax. The experience at the Japanese restaurant in the hotel was of the same level, beautiful decor but no welcome by a manager. The 39€ sashimi is brought to you before they clean of the previous empty dish from the table. For the rental of the electric bike, they send you alone without explanation to the garage where you find your bike without a foot and not cleaned. All of this, I mentioned at the reception but at no point I got feedback or apologies, the customer is just a number. I was also very surprised about the Covid handling. There was gel available and people wearing masks inside the hotel but at no time I saw someone cleaning the elevators, banister, staircase etc. Scince Covid I have stayed in other establishments in Germany and they were very strict and staff always busy disinfecting . In one word, this hotel is far to expensive for...
