Hirsau Abbey — Hotel in Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Calw

Hotel Kloster Hirsau is a small independent hotel with a great location in Hirsau/Calw. Walking distance of things to do and see for tourists. ||||The rooms are older and in need of updating. Everything looks last renovated around 1999-2005, except for the television. ||||While older, the room was very clean and in good working order. Except for the television, which was not receiving the BBC or Sky. The only English news channel I could find was CNN.||||The bathroom had 1 towel. No soap, except liquid soap. No toiletries of any kind.||||I did receive a pair of slippers but no robe.||||The bed had 1 pillow on it.||||No USB outlets. No coffemaker.||||If I'm being honest, the room reminded me of a student dorm. It was small and plain. It didn't feel like a 4-star hotel. ||||Getting to the room was a challenge because the hotel has automatic, sensor-activated lights. Most of the time the lights didn't turn on, which meant walking in the dark and opening and closing my door with the old-fashioned key in the dark. In 2021, a hotel should use electronic keycards.||||Supposedly, there is a spa with massages and even a gym, sauna and pool. However, I was never told about these amenities at check-in. I never saw them either. I only know about them because I read the hotel guide book in the room.||||Wireless internet worked everywhere and was fast enough for video streaming.||||The restaurant is the best feature of the hotel. ||||My dinner was excellent. Service was fine. I only wanted a first course and main course but was served 4 courses plus bread. I think there was a miscommunication between my English and the waiter's German. The wine list was intimidating because it was not translated, but the dry (trocken) riesling and house champagne were both superb. ||||Breakfast was a typical European hotel buffet. Supposedly, you could get eggs cooked to order but this was never offered to me. I didn't get coffee until I was almost finished eating. I would have liked self-serve coffee or at least coffee in the guest room.||||The hotel has an outdoor section for dining in warmer weather. However, most of the tables were dirty or covered with debris from trees and not cleaned.||||Be advised that the front desk is not staffed 24/7. Also, communicating with staff in English was a challenge beyond basic questions and dialogue. For anything complicated, you probably need to type something into Google Translate.||||Overall, if the hotel marketed itself as 3 stars it would be a good value. For 4 stars, it is tired and not in keeping with 4-star...

I know I am not small, but I am no giant either. However, I simply did not fit into this hotel and its furniture. Everything seemed to be made for dwarfs, yet the setting was far from being a Snow White fairy tale. I had trouble getting out of chairs (both in the room and public areas) and the bed, because they were so low, my feet hung over the bed, and when I stood at the bathroom sink, my wife remarked that it looked as if I were at a urinal.||||Other problematic issues include: an uninformed front desk staff that could not make dinner recommendations for after 9pm (which is when the hotel restaurant closes, even on a weekend) - even if it included driving to a nearby town, a shower with virtually no water pressure but temperatures varying from icebox to the-kettle-is-boiling.||||Breakfast was less than satisfactory, too. For a four-star hotel, both the quality of the ingredients as well as the presentation left a lot to be desired. The coffee was so weak that one wonders if the proprietors are simply being too cheap to pay for actual coffee beans.||||The only saving grace may be the hotel's pool, which was okay. Okay. Restaurant Besuch im Rahmen des Calwer Sommer 2023

Aufgrund eigener guter Erfahrungen meiner Freundin waren wir am Freitag im Rahmen des Calwer Sommers 2023 Gast im Restaurant. Meine Freundin hatte vorsichtshalber einen Tisch für 2 Personen reserviert. Vielleicht lag es an der Wetterlage, auf jeden Fall war das Restaurant sehr überschaubar mit Gästen ausgelastet. Aber anstelle einen schönen Platz zugeteilt bekommen, da genügend Kontingent vorhanden war, wurden wir freundlich zu einem kleinen Tisch geführt, bei dem ein Gast das zweifelhafte Vergnügen gehabt hätte, während des gesamten Besuches auf eine Wand zuschauen, da der Tisch auch zudem in einer Ecke platziert war. Das fand ich schon grenzwertig, für ein Restaurant mit dem Anspruch den dieses Hauses für sich erhebt. Aber...., aufgrund meiner Rückfrage wurde uns ein neuer und angenehmer Platz zugewiesen. Soweit so gut. Dann kam die nächste unangenehme Überraschung. Die Auswahl der "Festspielkarte". Eine in Bezug auf Auswahl sehr übersichtliche Speisekarte. Mehr notgedrungen fiel meine Wahl auf Filetspitzen mit Pilzrahmsoße, jedoch hätte ich gerne anstelle der mit angebotenen Kroketten, die ebenfalls in der übersichtlichen Karte angebotenen Semmelknödel versucht. Und das war nicht möglich! Das jeweilige Gericht konnte nur wie auf der Karte angeboten, bestellt werden. Ich dachte, ich höre nicht richtig. Es entstand eine etwas längere Debatte mit der durchaus freundlichen Servicekraft. Es fielen Argumente wie, Ansturm gerecht werden...( Restaurant war max. zu 30% belegt), Küche nicht überfordern, wenn ich das für Sie so bestelle, wollen das andere Gäste womöglich auch.... Es ist aber auch ungeheuer, ein Gast möchte eine andere Beilage, die auch auf der Karte steht, und bringt anscheinend mit dieser "absurden Forderung" alles durcheinander...Zu anderen Zeiten, also ohne Festspiel Stress, wäre es eventuell möglich, aber so..... Ich war und bin entsetzt über eine derartige Service Wüste. Sorry, das es eine solange Rezension ist, aber ich bin wirklich verärgert über diese Vorgehensweise. Denn...., ich konnte nirgends auf der Karte günstigere Festspiel Sonderpreise entnehmen und gehe somit einfach einmal davon aus, daß ich egal ob Festspiel oder nicht, immer den gleichen monitären Beitrag zu leisten habe. So, noch kurz ein paar Worte zu dem Essen selber. Das Gericht wurde innerhalb einer angemessenen Zeit und heiß serviert. Zudem waren die Service Kräfte wirklich freundlich unterwegs. Aber, vielleicht hatte der Koch gerade nicht seine beste Stunde, denn aufgrund der vielen guten Bewertungen habe ich definitiv eine bessere Ausführung erwartet. Gemüse aus dem Topf auf den Teller, Mohrrübe derart "Al dente" das ich sie nicht essen konnte. Die Kroketten waren ok. Das Fleisch für mein Geschmack grenzwertig in Bezug auf Zartheit und die Pilzsoße.... absolut nichts besonderes. Das habe ich schon ganz anders gegessen. Zum krönenden Abschluss gab es leider nur eine Tasse Kaffe und keinen Milchkaffee. Warum? Tja, es gibt tatsächlich keine laktosefreie Milch. Mir hat es gereicht. Ehrlich, da kenne ich Restaurants in denen kann ich mein Geld auf angenehmere und schmackhaftere Art, "verfuttern". Nichtsdestotrotz wünsche ich Ihnen insgeheim, daß mein ausführlicher Bericht hilft, ggfs. Schwachstellen...
