this hotel is amazing. i don’t even know where to start.
afantou is more residential and the area around the hotel is rather industrial. the roads are quite dangerous (maybe not the best place for toddlers, but okay for older kids who are sensible.) the hotel is right next to a main road, meaning you can hear the noise from the poolside bar, but i can‘t hear it at all in the room i‘m staying in, however this also makes it easier to take daytrips, i defintely recommend lindos, and another family here took a trip to rhodes old town.
the food is your average all inclusive. there‘s usually always pasta, chips, pizza, and some more greek dishes. the breakfast is good, because there‘s hot breakfast food, fruit and yogurt, and also cheeses and meats. the lunches and dinners are often quite repetitive, but there‘s one or two different dishes every night (i mean it‘s a help yourself buffet, which always has pasta and similar dishes, but also a different dish like souvlaki kebabs every day) it‘s good for picky eaters, as there‘s bread, pasta, salad, and chips. i wouldnt call the food „outstanding“ but it‘s certainly good. the desserts are usually jelly pots, rice pudding, a different cake every day, help yourself ice cream, and there’s fruits.
the service is AMAZING! our flush broke one day, and before we even told someone, we got back to our room after a pool day, and it was already fixed. at breakfast, i saw a girl struggling to cut the bread, and one of the chefs (i think a chef) stepped in and showed her how to do it. you have to clear up your own plates after meals, but there’s often the sweetest lady who doesnt mind doing it for you. we‘re greeted every time we walk past reception with smiles. and when we arrived at 1am, since the restaurant was closed, we were provided with some sandwiches, and bottles of water. When we checked out, they told us we were allowed to use the bar, the restaurant, the pool, and the shower rooms still. the staff are all so nice.
the bar is very good. you can get all inclusive cocktails until 10.30pm, and after that you have to pay. there are also mocktails, and you can ask for the cocktails without the alcohol, or a different one. the afandou special is VERY STRONG, its like 70% ouzo! but the others are a good strength. ice cream with either strawberry sauce is served (all inclusive) until late afternoon, but until 10.30 you can help yourself in the restaurant.
the pool is a good size. the shallow end is shallow enough for me (5‘1) to stand with my shoulders above water, and the deep end is 1.5m deep, which most people can stand in. the section for kids is 0.4m, which is also good for sitting and reading. my only complaint is that it‘s not heated, but it‘s only may now, so by the summer holidays, it will probably be okay. the pool is surrounded by sunbeds which are comfortable.
the rooms are good (again pretty average but i have no complaints. you have aircon, a balcony, and a bathroom. my only problem with the rooms is that the wifi isn’t very good. you can text on whatsapp, but you can’t really use tiktok or instagram, but the wifi is alot better down by the pool, or in reception, where there are sofas. the shower is a little small, so it‘s difficult to put on conditioner out of the water, but thats not a big issue at all. the water pressure is pretty good, and the temp is good. i also think a full body mirror would be a good addition, but again, that’s barely an issue.
in conclusion, definitely come here with tweens and teenagers, not younger children (although there are some swings and a slide) and expect kind people and absolutely amazing...
Read moreI'm going to start by saying that I don't understand how the hotel has 4,2 stars here. I made a list of prons and cons so you can decide if this place is worth it.
PROS: -The rooms. They are big, have AC and the beds are comfy. The bathroom is a decent size they give you some toiletries. The balcony is big, has two chairs and a small table. You also get towels. -The rooms are cleaned daily, they change the sheets and the towels. -The bar is great, has a decent amount of options to pick from and they are not stingy with the alcohol. If you want to get your buzz on, 2 cocktails are enough (trust me). -The pool is very nice, big, clean, has floaties and volley balls to play in the water. Enough lounge chairs for everybody. There's an old man that cleans it daily and honestly that was the highlight of my trip.
CONS: -Locations, this place is in the middle of nowhere, there's only one store around. The closest town is 7km away, the beach is 2km away and very hard to reach and also who wants to walk that much in the heat? Exactly. There's a bus station right in front of the hotel but buses don't come too often. If you want to visit something you need to rent a car. Do not rent bikes, cars are better for long distances. -The food. I don't even know where to start. Very limited and repetitive options. The breakfast is always the same: full english, bacon, some pastries, fruit and tasteless cereal. Lunch and dinner always the same noodles with the same bolognese sauce, some potatoes, mistery meat that looks as bad as it tastes. Dessert is either baklava, pink or yellow cake, tasteless fruit and some ice cream. Everything is bland, the salads are not as good as other reviews said. Some are quite disturbing, who mixes cabbage with apples, oranges and mayo??? I understand this is a family business but please end the nepotism and hire a real chef or at least get the one you have a cooking book or cooking classes. There's not greek food, just one night that there was musaka but that's all, which is quite disappointing.
Most people pick all inclusive so they don't have to worry about food or spending too much money, but at the end of the day the food is not worth it and you might end up spending more money on take out...
Read moreFood good, limited choice, simple but well cooked with all options (veggie and vegan) catered for, salads excellent and always fresh, restaurant staff and chef very cheerful and efficient; pool, sunbeds and bar area good, daytime bar man, Yannis, also excellent. Room size and balcony good, (Solo traveller). Clean overall. Local bus stop close by, but 'excursion' bus stop some distance away. Location of actual hotel: - reception area entrance was through builder's merchant yard. Back entrance on to busy dual carriageway. Attitude of some management staff not good - possibly due to lack of understanding/command of any language other than Greek e.g I was told nearest shop was 500kilometres away, when I queried this it came down to 500 metres, in fact in was less than 50m!! Only 4 or 5 max hot showers in 2 weeks, mostly cold or tepid drizzle!!! Reason given was that there was not enough sun, (29°c @8.00hrs, no clouds!!!) Took 3 times of asking before anyone came to look - but no evidence of any attempts at repairs. Other guests were adding cold water to morning showers because they were so hot!!! Rooms were cleaned/sheets, towels changed every other day - mistakes made each time - towels/ bath mat not replaced, used sheet left behind and a nightdress went missing - probably with bedding - never seen again - even after daily queries!! No real apology or offer of any compensation. Only 2 working channels on TV - both Greek language - Ch2 showed English language (and others) programmes with greek subtitles, which kind of helped!!! Info provided when booking by TUI shop stated a courtesy bus available to beach - no bus!! I would not have chosen this hotel had I known this is advance. Taxi to pebbly beach cost €10 one way!!! It was a 6.6km walk otherwise. Pool only open between 1000 and 1800hrs (due to Insurance cover I believe). All inclusive snacks very limited. No info pack in rooms, only on reception desk A4 size in frames - small print. There are no visits to this hotel from TUI reps, support from TUI very poor - complaint regarding this also being put forward. This hotel is at lower end of price range - you get what you pay for, but only just and as stated TUI support...
