It was hard to tell from the plain exterior on a humble but safe street, but I would find this hotel to be pretty amazing. Though travelling solo, I was given a large room, tastefully decorated in a sort of dark-wood style (and with a large bathroom), while across the hall was a large guest lounge, with nice couches, a small selection of used books, and hot water, tea, and instant coffee available all day. And when you combine this with its fine location, an easy walk from the central plaza (Parque Centroamerica), you have what is a great place to stay. I'll point out only that the rooms may vary somewhat in quality -- if possible, you may want to check out a couple of them upon checking in. |I should add that I found Xela to be a more interesting city than many guide-book authors let on. The central plaza is grand, and the large historic center exhibits essentially the same quaint Spanish-American style as do many older Latin American towns, though it's not kept up as diligently as more popular tourist destinations...

I had reserved a room in advance through their website, but when I showed up, they had no record of my reservation in their system, even though I had a reservation confirmation email complete with the reservation number. They kept saying my reservation was cancelled even though I hadn't cancelled it and hadn't received any other email from them except for confirming my reservation. Because of this, and because they were fully booked, they had no room for me; I would need to find another place to stay...on a Saturday night, around 7pm. I've traveled alot and have never had a hotel completely mess up my stay (or lack there of) like this before.
The woman at the desk was not helpful. It was a Saturday night and pretty much all other hotels were booked. I was pretty screwed at this point.
However, the man who started his shift during this situation saved my day. He personally carried my luggage two blocks to another hostel, where he had called to...
Read moreThis was the best hotel in Guatemala. I was so impressed with the wonderful staff, from front desk Ofelia, who was always ready and willing to help with anything from transportation, both public and private, to getting tours to Aliana in the kitchen to the other staff members, both in the kitchen and the cleaning ladies (who are always asking if we needed anything, towels, etc) as well as the young men fixing anything around the place. They were always cleaning everything. The place is spotless, the breakfast is excellent with various choices. They have beautiful artwork everywhere. There is coffee/tea available 24 hours. The rooms are huge. Even though the private bathroom is outside, it is also pretty big and very, very clean. There is HOT WATER (like really hot water) 24/7. It is very safe to stay here. The main central area is walking distance. There are food places right outside the hotel. It is better than a 5* hotel....
