Let's face it, a 4 star hotel in Hungary should not live up to too many peoples expectations and the Erkel is no exception to that rule. ||||Let's start with the exterior. It looks like a communist block from the abandoned city of Chernobyl. It is very very outdated, in serious need of some modernisation. How they will achieve that is anyone's guess because it would take the money of The Sultan of Brunei to make those reparations. So don't let the photos fool you. You will be disappointed, as I was.||||The reception. To be honest it looks quite nice. The member of staff we had checking us in was very good, polite and also spoke 4 languages. Fortunately one of those was English, so I didn't have too many problems there. ||||The rooms. Honestly, Erkel Owner, please look at hotels in other places for even an insight into what a 4 star hotel room should look like. Terribly terribly outdated. Two single beds pushed into one does not constitute a double bed, mini bar does not mean 1 bottle of water and a snickers. ||||The view. It is astonishingly bad. We booked a castle view and even though we were on the 7th floor we still struggled to see past the overgrown trees. Goodness knows what the people on floors 1-6 were thinking if they also booked a Castle View room.||||Smokers. Beware, there is a strict no smoking policy in this hotel which also includes your balcony. Really?? An outside balcony? No smoking? A nice welcome card awaits you stating that if you smoke on your balcony you get a 150 Euro fine. Nice!! It's an outside balcony for goodness sake, not some enclosed, public space. A lot of people like nothing more than relaxing after a days sightseeing, drinking one of the overpriced mini bar drinks, having a cigarette or cigar, whilst sitting on their balcony looking at the lights of the town glimmering below. That pleasure for smokers is removed from you the minute you step foot in the hotel. ||||The food. Oh god!! Where do i start?? Ummmmm, ummmmm, errrrrrr, ok.....My mum always told me to be honest, so here goes......It's diabolical. The evening meal is truly one of the worst experiences i have ever had. Everything was either cold, undercooked, overcooked, not cooked, piping hot with the risk of serious mouth injury or just plain disgusting. Tables not laid, go find your own cutlery seems to be the general consensus here. The hoards of Rhinoceros sized neanderthals stampeding through the restaurant was a sight you only normally see on nature programs in the Serengeti. You can see their thoughts, "Food, food, food, food" It's like they have been starved for weeks before, which, judging by their sheer body mass, could never have been the case!!! Breakfast is no different, only the hoards are a little more subdued due to the fact that most of them spent the night in the bar drowning their sorrows to escape their meager life reality. The sheer chavness of the place really comes to the forefront here.||||The thermal baths. They are lovely and one of only two reasons i have not giving this rating a 1. The other being the reception staff. However, judging by the disgusting personal hygiene of some people there, I would hate to think what is lurking in that pool. I think i'm ok. Been back 2 weeks now and nothing itches nor does it burn when i pee so i reckon i dodged the bullet there!!!||||Check out was relatively simple so again that counts towards my 2 star rating.||||In summary, would i go back there? Not if it was the last hotel on earth!!! You are better off getting one of the local apartments nearby and eating out at the restaurant Marcus each day. For sure you will have a more...
Read moreEarlier we spent couple of days at this hotel. Now we came via Booking.com. Unfortunately Booking did not handle kids accommodation as well. Therefore the journey has started with misunderstanding.||Hotel is clear and very nice. We stood in Dürer wing of the building. It is a 4-star hotel. Inside it is clear and nice.||We did not use the wellness of the hotel. Every day we went to Várfürdő.||||Food is OK. Average quality. In hotels of this category you can find much betters.||||So, get back to the beginning. On check-out we got invoice with amount almost double as it was in Booking confirmation. I understand that kids have extra costs, but we're talking about 8-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy. Before the trip we confirmed for extra fees. But at the reception I was surprised. I paid for it, but I got compliant against it. The guy at reception re-calculated and confirmed that it is really an issue. But he can not rollback the card transaction. But he offered if I leave the number of my banking account then they will pay back the difference. I agreed with it. But I received two kinds of invoices with different items in it. It was very strange. But we divorced smile that the problem is solved. After a couple of days the finance department of the hotel declined the transaction. They found so many reasons for it. It was the third kind of explanation of the bill with new different items of the invoice. It seems they can find out anything just not to pay and accept their mistake. The difference is approximately 160 EUR. So, it is not a huge amount, but for me it worth this review to wrote. The total of invoice without this difference is still larger than the price what we had to pay for 2 adult and for 2 children according to Booking. But it was acceptable for us. But for them it seems it was not.||Therefore, in the future we will avoid the usage of Booking.com and services of the...
