I had an extremely unpleasant and alarming experience at Hotel Pragati Manor, Guwahati, during my stay with my husband.
On March 21, 2025, we checked into the Presidential Suite (Room 501) for two nights. Before arriving, I had made a verbal booking over the phone, as the hotel did not require any advance deposit. This was their usual booking system, which I had experienced before. On March 23, 2025, before checking out, I requested the receptionist to book the same room (501) for March 27, 2025, and she agreed.
However, when we arrived on March 27, 2025, a manager named Hemanta was at the reception and informed us that Room 501 was not available. Instead, he assigned us Room 204, claiming it was of the same category. But in reality, Room 204 was significantly smaller and could not be considered a Presidential Suite by any means. Despite this, the room tariff was the same. Anyone who carefully looks at the two separate bills can clearly see that even though the rooms were different, the charges remained identical, which is completely unfair and unethical. My husband was quite disappointed, but I convinced him to stay for one night.
The most shocking incident happened early the next morning, on March 28, 2025, around 5 AM. My husband was fast asleep, and I was in the bathroom when I suddenly heard someone unlocking our door. Startled, I rushed out and saw a man attempting to enter our room. Fortunately, I had secured the door with the security chain, which prevented him from getting in. I screamed, and as the man tried to flee, I caught hold of him and noticed he had a master key card, which he had used to unlock our room.
My screams woke my husband and the guest from Room 201, who came out in alarm. We protested strongly in front of the night duty receptionist and the security in charge and demanded they call the police or the hotel manager. However, instead of taking strict action against the intruder, the hotel staff simply apologized and tried to defend the man, saying it was a mistake. Their lack of concern made it clear that such security breaches were not uncommon at this hotel.
We had to leave early for our next destination, so we checked out quickly but warned the hotel staff that we expected a follow-up from Manager Hemanta or a higher authority regarding this serious security lapse. Unfortunately, even after a week, no one from the hotel has contacted us.
Given this horrifying experience, I strongly discourage anyone from staying at this hotel. If you do, it will be at your own risk. To support my claims, I am attaching photos of the intruder, and our bills from both stays, which clearly show that the room categories were different, yet the charges...
Read moreJust an overnight stay of about 8 hours. This was an official trip and booking was done by my Company. Did not get time to explore the hotel due to late night check in and early morning check out. However here are a few observations:- Location is quite convenient, for staying or even exiting Guwahati towards the east or the west. Shower curtain is badly needed in the well equipped wash room. Good breakfast. Dosa is a wrong choice for a South Indian spread. It ought to be either Idli, Wada or Upama. Sauted Vegetables tasted a little stale. Sprouts were good and fresh. Canned Pineapple juice in the land of Pineapples was misplaced. Advice for food (Breakfast) in one line:- Looks better than it tastes. So take smaller portions to start with. House keeping is immaculate. The Manager Mr Raj was very helpful to have left a word behind for my late check in and for arranging a Taxi to the Airport via Maa Kamakhya Temple. The indoor fish pond at the reception...
