I picked this OYO hotel because it was a really low price, $10 a night. I am a stranger to the city layout of Bengaluru, so I had no idea what to expect from a locality known as Kalasipalyam. To start with I could never get the name right, so I just ended up calling the Colliseum.
Just so you know, you will be in the chaotic heart of the old city of Bengaluru, and right in the thick of the interstate bus terminus. Not what you would call a serene, well-appointed environment. Expect, dust, three-wheelers, cows, lumbering Volvos, lots of fumes, banana sellers, goats, crowds, kebabs, and confusion. Guard your bags.
The hotel in the middle of this pandemonium is a bit of a surprise. It is a part of a shopping complex, but unexpectedly well-appointed, with glossy marble tiles and decent rooms. Once in your room, you are well insulated from the madness outside. I was pleased to be upgraded to a spacious deluxe room, with a view into an open lot where future construction is planned.
The hotel is also a multi-cultural treat, a window into the Indian mosaic. At the desk are two Malayalis (from the state of Kerala). This is India’s most literate state, so you’ll get an intelligent, thoughtful welcome and attention at the reception.
The hotel staff is friendly and respond quickly to request. Definitely a hospitable OYO. The room boys are from the states of Bengal and Bihar, and a few lads are from this state, Karnataka. If you’re a foreigner, everyone might look the same — just Indian — to you, but trust me, there are four languages in the air: Malayalam, Bengali, Hindi and Kannada, not to mention English.
Breakfast is included if you pay a little extra, but is served hot and packed to you in the room, along with a thimbleful of hot chai served in a paper cup. You can ask for a larger helping in a proper cup. The breakfast is packed at the Medina Hotel across the road. Expect oilier than usual fare, since there is a significant Muslim population in this locality, and they tend to like their food rich and fried.
Here’s what not to expect —
Toilet paper Tissue box Drinking water In-room fridge A chair to sit on (though the deluxe room has a two-seater sofa). I requested a chair and it was promptly delivered
My bathroom was pretty in the photo, but pretty much a wreck to use. The fixtures were broken, water came in a trickle or not at all, the toilet seats would not stay up, and the cistern would not always fill up after I’d flushed — or do so over an hour, drop by drop.
The staff is friendly as hell and eager to please, so if you ask for any kind of help, the Malayali managers will send the Bengali or Bihari boys straight up to deal with it. Sometimes, they just give up and offer to change your room.

Read moreHere's an honest review for you. Everything about this place is so annoying & disturbing, that I had to check out within a day even after paying for 3 days.During checkin they alloted me a room with broken window panes, dirty toilets, broken taps & water sunken towels. Even though later I changed my room but still same problems continued.Worse part was the room service, the service boys were weirdly rude. I had a mini leg fracture in the hotel but no one seemed to care & help me with my luggage. Service guys were terrible. To add on to the miseries, location was also troublesome being amidst a marketplace, so you have to get used to 24/7 traffic honking....
