A property owned by the Haryana Tourism, the Hotel Kingfisher, Ambala is located on the NH - 1, on the other side i.e. while returning from Ambala towards Delhi. Located approximately 190 kms. from Delhi (border), it is quite easily noticeable from the highway. But to gain access, you need to go slightly ahead and take a u-turn to reach the hotel. I have been frequenting the place for the last 6 years (as a stopover from Delhi to Shimla and beyond on our drives into the Himalayas) as a night - halt. It is an easy 3 hour drive from the Delhi border, all along the national highway.
Once inside, you are awed by the amount of the space available for parking and the greenery of the lawns. The lawns are full of lush grass and are well-manicured at all times of the year.
Also noticeable, and praiseworthy has been the attitude of the staff. Whether it has been the person at the reception doing the check-in (or check-out) or the bellboys, and at any time, early morning, late at night, they have always been courteous, patient to listen to our requirements and our queries, as also, have always exuded an enthusiasm and an eagerness to please the customer; all this despite being in a government setup which has slightly fallen behind times and therefore does not attract too much of a crowd.
Yet, with their attitude they more than make up for the gap between other private establishments. This has been characteristic of this hotel, consistently, across time, and personnel.
The food is very well-cooked and all items mentioned in the menu are available. The variety is at par with other places though the service takes about 20 - 25 minutes. The timings of the kitchen is from 7 a.m. till about 10 p.m., and the staff will cater to any special requirements with food also.
The beds, linen, and blankets are all well-provided in each room, and are clean and absolutely ready to use. Toiletries though have to be carried and are not provided.
The bathrooms are clean, well-lit and have running hot and cold water.
The rooms, decor, ambience, are all very simple, yet comfortable, and are quite suited for a family wanting to take a night halt or spend a couple of days there. The location of the hotel too, is right on a national highway, right opposite a petrol pump, which again remains open till quite late in the night.
Regarding the name of the hotel - Kingfisher, there is a small water body (lake) right next to the hotel which hosts various species of cranes, ducks, etc. and Kingfishers!! These birds are plentiful around this lake and come flying onto the lawns and the surrounding trees in the mornings, a sight by itself. It is here that the staff of the hotel need to be sensitized - all the waste, largely non-biodegradable and Styrofoam, plastics, etc. are mindlessly dumped near the water body, leaving these magnificent birds (and some migratory ones also) to grapple with foreign matter which is polluting, and at times can be life threatening also. If the hotel gets its waste disposal correct, it can result in a healthier ecosystem for these winged guests, which in turn, can be an added attraction for the...
Read moreIf you are in Ambala, be rest assured that Kingfisher, a Government run Hotel here is the best of the lot. This hotel is worthy to be praised in terms of location, behavior of the staff members, room size and ambiance etc.
We, while returning from Himachal Pradesh, have been here for one night. Right from the reception, all other staff members including the Manager, every one, every one with great services made our stay there memorable.
This hotel is like four kilometers from Ambala Cantonment Station. We were to leave the hotel at the afternoon and since we left our car the previous day, the Manager himself arranged local autos for us
They have a great restaurant inside and there are plenty of open spaces inside the hotel arena to pass your time.
Thank you Sir for your support and co-operation for a significant period.

Read moreThe hotel Kingfisher is on Delhi Highway in a good location. We stayed for one night in a standard room. There is a large lobby. The building has large lawns., which r not very well maintained . In general the property maintenance is very poor. The restaurant did not have half the things on the menu, the light beer was over, the restaurant is not well lighted and the furniture is not very clean. Food taste is average. Much worse r the rooms. In our room the furniture upholstery were positively dirty, room was dusty with not very clean walls, tables were greasy, the linen on beds was not changed after the stay of the previous guests. There were hair on it everywhere. The linen was changed after we insisted on it. The floor at the entrance to the room was broken and was covered with a dirty rug. The room balcony absolutely dirty and was probably not cleaned in last 15 days. The bathroom was just tolerable. Shower and geyser were working. Overall a bad impression and not a pleasant place to stay due to dirty rooms. The room rate was reasonable for a standard room. The staff was polite. No tea bags and sugar etc...
