I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at the North Gate hotel in Madurai, and I must say it was one of the most disappointing stays I have ever had. Despite the promising online reviews, my time at this hotel left me thoroughly dissatisfied, with a complete lack of maintenance, cleanliness, and basic amenities such as a functioning TV and Wi-Fi. The amount of money I spent on this stay was simply not worth it.
One of the glaring issues that I encountered at North Gate was the overall lack of maintenance. The hotel seemed neglected, with chipped paint, broken fixtures, and a generally run-down appearance. It was evident that the management did not prioritize the upkeep of the property, which was a major letdown. In addition, the lack of cleanliness was unacceptable. The rooms were dirty and unkempt, with stained bed linens and a strong odor that was hard to ignore. It felt as though the rooms had not been properly cleaned in a long time.
Another major disappointment was the absence of a functioning TV and Wi-Fi. In this day and age, these amenities are considered standard in most hotels. However, at North Gate, they were clearly not a priority. The television in my room was outdated and did not work at all. I reported the issue to the hotel staff, but they were unresponsive and failed to address the problem during my entire stay. Similarly, the Wi-Fi was practically nonexistent. It was either extremely slow or completely unavailable, making it impossible to connect and stay connected.
Furthermore, the service at North Gate was abysmal. The staff members were unfriendly, unhelpful, and seemed disinterested in providing any form of customer service. It was evident that they lacked the necessary training and motivation to meet the basic needs and expectations of their guests. Any requests or complaints fell on deaf ears, leaving me feeling frustrated and neglected throughout my stay.
Considering the numerous issues I encountered, I find it difficult to recommend North Gate hotel to anyone. It is clear that this establishment does not prioritize customer satisfaction or basic maintenance. The lack of cleanliness, malfunctioning amenities, and overall poor service made my experience truly unpleasant. For the amount of money I spent, I expected a far better quality of service and accommodation.

Cons: Very poorly in maintenance. Toilet / Bathroom was poorly maintained. The Washbasin tap has very little water whereas health facet water leaks fully. Had to call maintenance dept to fix it although fixed water leaks. Only way is to close the main water nob if customer is concerned about water wastage. Reception are never welcoming, informed on the water leakage, for them it was just yet another issue. The probably needs loads of training for Front Office. Food - God its Soo soo expensive, not sure why. Also they do not have much options. Yes very oily and not the kind of value for money when we expect a decent food for the cost. Though they say Non-Smoking, smoke smell is very high in corridors. For the cost of room, no much frills as we expect from a regular hotel. Bathroom towels were hung in Bathroom so not sure if they were used ones or fresh, did not have courage to use it.
Overall - If the management takes serious interest to fix maintenance in order and do routine audits of rooms functions and food menu etc this hotel can be one of finest hotels in Madurai.
My Review - But for now, if you are planning to have a quick stay maybe Yes but a Pleasant Stay a Sure NO.

Read moreI had stayed in this hotel some years back. It was well maintained and the rooms and service were very good. With that experience in mind, we went there planning to stay for 3 days. To start the horrible experience they argued that we didn't book and then said ok didn't see the booking. The person at reception is very arrogant and he was not even sorry but showing attitude. Then the lift was not working but made my aged parents climb the second floor. No plug points were working in the room. They informed us that they will shift the room to the ground floor in the evening and will repair the plug points. When we approached them in the evening they were saying it is not possible. We informed that as my father was supposed to get eye surgery the next day and climbing stairs is not possible they shouted at us and they don't know when the lift will be ready. It seems like the two men at reception are planning to shut the hotel because I have never seen this much unprofessional behaviour and showing attitude to customers. We are paying this much amount for this very bad customer service and rooms are very old and have a foul smell. The bathrooms are horrible and the room boy himself stands on the bathroom mat with his chappals on, leaving boot marks.
