Amma Mess — Restaurant in Madurai

Wow!! Just amazing finger licking delicious tasty food! I want to give a detailed review for this wonderful hotel.. a landmark of Madurai City.

We were driving from Chennai to Tirunelveli and planning our lunch in Madurai, so was checking for good hotel and this "Amma mess" was in top of our list. Hence drove inside the city to try out here.

We reached here around 2.30 pm and it was super crowded, we had to wait for our seating table. We ordered for one non-veg meals and one mutton biriyani.

Firstly they served us mutton kola urundai, it was super tasty, crispy on the outside and soft spongy mutton stuffing inside. This was the best kola urundai I had tasted ever. Next for the meals they served white rice and mutton liver gravy, naatu kozhi curry, crab gravy, fish curry and mutton curry. To finish with this they gave rasam, curd and butter milk. I have no words to express the taste of every single gravy and curry. Every item was unique tasty and mouth watering. Even the rasam and butter milk was super tasty. We ordered few side dishes, prawn pepper fry, mutton chukka and crab omelette. These dishes tasted "out of the world". The mutton biriyani was very good too.

We had a very happy meal and thanked to cook too for serving us such a wonderful food. Never miss this hotel if you are visiting Madurai. A definite recommend place from me.

This is my honest feedback:

Positives: Decent ambience, neat and clean place, polite staffs & overall good hospitality. Wide range of non veg food which you can not find anywhere else in madurai (perhaps !!) Taste is average to good and food is hygenic.

Negatives: Costly. From the menu it will look reasonable price but once the order will come then you realise that the serving is too less/small. I spent 600+ to eat 3 dish and I was not totally full. I ordered mutton biryani (visible in the pic), there was only 3-4 small piece of mutton was there in side. (Disappointed) Taste is good but ordinary. I mean you can get the same taste at other place as well. There was no extra-ordinary (taste) about any dishes. Mutton biryani which I ordered was having ordinary taste. I can bet, you will get better taste in any other good restaurant in Madurai.

Verdict: If you really want to taste exotic non veg food like quail, rabbit, crab omlette, different types of non veg dosa etc, you should visit this place since you will not get these items anywhere else in Madurai. But if just want to enjoy common non veg items like biryani, chicken/mutton/fish curry or starter items, better avoid this place and go anywhere else, I can gurantee, you will get better value for money at other good place. I went to this place with some expectations after watching a review on YouTube. When we reached we were hounded upon by 3 men on what we want to order. We ordered chicken biryani and prawns. We were made to feel guilty to order just that. Later on they repetitively started asking what else what else while we were eating until we were fed up and ordered a mutton biryani and coke. In a span of 30 minutes we were pestered minimum 8-9 times. Is this serving customers or bullying? Also chicken and mutton biryani base was completely same. Ordered chicken biryani, mutton biryani, prawn pepper roast and 2 small coke. The bill that was presented was ₹890. The bill wasn’t handed over to me. The waiter kept showing the bill from his own hand because of which I couldn’t see why it added up to be 890. Later after being fed up When I gave ₹1000 to him he just thanked me and left. I didn’t want to give him service tip or if I would’ve given him it would have been not more than 20-30₹. I don’t know Is this service or theft?(Also when I checked the rates on Swiggy delivery, bill turns out to be 810₹ and I was presented 890₹ bill and stolen ₹1000)
