Dear Mukesh Rakshit: I want to share an overwhelmingly emotional and humbling experience from Kolhapur, India that restored my faith in humanity. I'm a US citizen, visiting Dharwad, India to celebrate my parents' milestone birthdays - my father's 88th and mother's 78th. Following my desire to visit the Kolhapur Mahalaxmi temple, and on my sister recommendation, we decided to stay at Sayaji Hotel. My sister has stayed at the hotel multiple times previously as a visiting faculty, and highly recommended the hotel to stay. On October 17th, my 78-year-old mother, sister, and I arrived in Kolhapur in our owned car with a familiar driver. Everything went smoothly - from the divine darshan at the temple to our planned activities. However, our ordeal began the next day when we stopped at a shop before heading back to Dharwad the next day. We left our belongings, including laptops and bags, in the parked car. Upon returning, both the car and driver had vanished. When we finally reached him on the phone, he was intoxicated, disoriented, and kept giving us conflicting stories about his and the car's location before hanging up on us. What followed was nothing short of a miracle - the way the Sayaji Hotel staff rallied around us. Under duty manager Prasad Maskar's leadership, Devadas (Dev) Kamble accompanied my sister and me to search for the driver near Bindu Chowk. Meanwhile, the reception team - Shweta Shah and Ashwini Shinde - showed extraordinary compassion, sitting with my worried mother for four hours, trying to comfort her despite her refusing to eat. The security team, Sanjay Patil and Girish Patil, coordinated with traffic police and local authorities. In a moment of clarity around 10 PM, we realized we could use our laptop's tracking feature to locate the car. This led us straight to our vehicle, which we found with a flat tire. Miraculously, all our belongings were intact. The hotel staff arranged for the tire replacement and ensured we returned safely to the hotel by 12:30 AM. From 3 PM until past midnight, the Hotel staff stood by us until 12.30 AM. There were moments when we questioned our faith in the Devi, in the people, and in everything. But the unwavering support, care, and love shown by the hotel staff restored our faith. They didn't just help us - they became family, friends in those desperate hours. We completely relied on them. Words fail to capture the depth of our gratitude and the emotions we experienced. In this unexpected challenging moment, these incredible people became our support system. Their kindness reminded us that there are good people in this world and to always have hope. Below are the list of people we are very grateful for (the names are not in any particular order). Read moreI was a loyal customer of Sayaji till last year. Every year whenever I travelled to region of south Maharashtra, I invariably booked my stay in Sayaji as I found property very good, staff supportive and food tasty. However, I was there for three nights last about ten days back and found that the quality of response has gone down and that food as well as services have deteriorated significantly.
This is a caution to fellow travellers who may book the hotel based on past good experience/s. Room service has gone down significantly. It has not only become painfully slow but also I have found that their staff did not follow instructions given. I don't know what's the issue as I spoke to them local language of Marathi. I found that Menu cards have been removed from room tables and upto 4th floor the residents don't even have a dedicated line to order food or a drink. They need to call the reception who directs you to another line which then connects you to the kitchen. This was not the case earlier. The menu does not offer you anything that you can offer to kids below 3 years. Pathetic. I had to take my granddaughter out twice to a neighbouring restaurant to feed her soft chappatis she could chew. Despite detailed instructions to make soft chappatis or rotis or parathas, they twice offered us tandoori parathas! And that too after good one hour wait. To be honest, this was not the hotel that I once immensely liked. The change seems to have occured in the past one year. Is this carelessness because the staff has changed or due to sheer arrogance on account of getting more business than what they can handle? This is a sad situation for travellers.
Please look at the two pictures enclosed. They tried to accomodate several teenagers on residential floors from a school. I have no objection to kids being accomodated in the hotel. But the people of duty should have thought of allocating them a floor close to ground. These kids were accomodated randomly which created traffic jams at elevators. On several occasions I and my wife had to climb down five floors to access lunch room. Once we had to climb up five flights.
I am deeply...
