Beware don't go there with family, if you complain about the service or cleanliness they will threaten you. The owner's brother(saroj da) and his only bihari staff were very rude. We booked a 6 days full sikkim package from siliguri railway station and this was the first point of stay upon arrival at Gangtok with my family. Here goes my experience at Hotel Shivalik retreat: From main road you have to climb down 40 stairs(without any kind of hand support) to reach at the hotel(with luggage of course). Most part of the stairs were slippery, old and made out of loose bricks and most of which was broken and covered with alagae.(absolute nightmare for elderly people) From the reception again I had to climb down another 20 stairs to reach at the room. The rooms provided were nothing compared the the pictures shown to us at the time of booking. They were not even worth 400-500 type community guesthouse. (Although the view from the window was good in one of the rooms, but certainly not good enough to make up for the miesery that one has to go through.) There was no Dustbin. No doormats. No drinking water provided(neither mineral nor RO). No towels. We booked 2 rooms and there was water problem in one of the bathrooms(it was barely 3°C and the tap for geyser wasn't working, flush was not working at all, shower was not working, bathroom lock was broken from inside). We ordered for tea and they took more than 50 minutes to prepare so we had to cancel that. My sister complained and when she ran into an argument with one of the bihari staffs(dark, thin and short heightened), he threw some threatening remarks at my sister. 5.We immediately left the hotel Shivalik Retreat and demanded our package provider to make our arrangements at some other hotel. They arranged our stay at hotel White Mountain(very close to MG road) which was awesome. Excellent rooms with all basic amenities (electric kettle, towels, soaps, conditioners) with excellent hospitality by their staff and food was also good there. Will not recommend anybody to go there at all, still if you are going there you better have reinforcements as that place is...
Read moreI stayed at this hotel during my Sikkim tour. Firstly I would say the stay was on an above average scale. Owner of this hotel, Saran Pradhan was awesome. We faced few issues during our stay but all of those were solved by Saran Pradhan. He did not throw tantrums but dealt with lots of patience and respect. He provided us with packages for Sikkim visit in budget. Before I tried for packages in make my trip and travel triangle but those were simply looting money. This hotel stay was also part of our trip . Food served was also good. One morning there were no helper boys , so Saran Pradhan himself cooked food for us. I also booked Darjeeling package with him. And that part of travel also went good. Thanks to Saran pradhan, my trip...
Read moreI was little apprehensive by looking at the past comments. However got convinced after talking to the owner and staff. They have taken this property on lease from August 2022 onwards. My personal experience has been very good. They have a lot of space. Rooms are spacious. Entire one floor for restaurant. Top floor was dedicated for free walk, terrace view of valley and Kanchanjangha mountain. Food was reasonably good and discounted too (after a smiling request :-)). We had to climb down approx. 40-50 staircases from NH10 to reach the reception, but remember you are not here to enjoy the sea...
