I stayed for 3 nights, in the cheapest room of the hotel. Booked from Booking.com for non-smoking room, and got a smoking room on the smoking floor instead. The staff said that my reserved room IS a smoking room. I objected, but there were nothing they can do about that, unless I upgrade my room by adding some 200 thousands IDR, to get a non-smoking room. I gave up, I accepted the smoking room, since they guarantted that it is clean, no cigarette smell, etc. The room is located at the 6th floor. Only 1 unit elevator available, and served only until the 5th floor. Too bad for me: I can only use the elevator until the 5th floor, then I have to take stairs to go to the sixth floor. Not convenient at all. It felt so bad - being a second class guest/ being in the cheapest section of the hotel - where other guests can access the room by elevator and me: dragging my luggage using stairs from the fifth to the sixth floor. ||Fortunately, I found the room very comfortable and clean! It is small, but I really do not mind, since I just needed a room to sleep and shower, so no problem. The bed is comfy, the room is very clean, the aircon worked well and the hot shower is just what ai needed! My room faces the back street, so no traffic sound was heard. I got a good night sleep there.||Here's my summary:|Location: great location, right in the middle of Kesawan area, where old xolonial buildings are. Many street foods around that area, withing 10 mins walk. |Staff: just okay;|Room: comfortable to sleep and shower.|Room access: bad. I have to use stairs to sixth floor, after the elevator took me until 5th floor. |Breakfast: i did not have breakfast in the hotel, I preferred to have my breakfasts at the street food in the area ||Overall: it is a good, clean hotel located at one if Medan's best locations....

The listing for my room type didn't mention that the room has no windows and I don't like staying in rooms without windows. In fact there were photos that showed windows in the room, so I expected it to have windows. However many of their rooms just don't have windows at all. The property is built in a weird manner where there are outside windows, a very narrow hallway, and then rooms on the inside of the building with no windows. See the attached photos. I don't know why it was built like this. The hallway is a little loud with the road noise but they could have remedied that by replacing the windows with sound proof ones and made the windows part of the rooms instead of outside the rooms. They could have even kept this design and put interior windows that look out on the hallway windows, just to get some natural light into the room.
The staff was nice but they wouldn't let me eat my Grab delivery at 10pm in the lobby, which was annoying. I didn't want to eat it in the room. I think they only allow people to sit there and order food from their on site restaurant. But it's 10pm and very few people were sitting there. I am a guest at the hotel so I should be able to use the facilities to eat my dinner. I didn't want to order anything from the hotel restaurant.
Finally the bed is hard, which is to be expected at this price point. But aside from having no windows, the room...
Read moreKama Hotel Medan offers a mix of history, convenience, and local charm. Nestled in bustling Kesawan, it’s just a short stroll from the Medan Train Station (especially if you are coming from the airport) ,the Tjong A Fie Mansion lies just further down the street and you get welcomed by Dutch colonial buildings along the same street.
Yes, it can get a bit lively at night (especially if your room sits near the windows facing the main street), this seems to be one of Medan’s most popular hangout streets! but that’s part of the fun—order a cup of local Indo coffee, instant or craft, grab a seat and people-watch while snacking on sate Padang or head over Tip Top restaurant with live band.
Rooms are a breakfast included deal. Local specialties lurk all round like Garuda nasi padang a stone’s throw away and the iconic Tip Top Restaurant right across the street. There are also stalls if you walk around. Hungry later? Room service has you covered (check the menu!), and Doppio Me Café serves great brews. Need cash or snacks? No problem—there’s an ATM in the lobby and an Indomaret nearby.
Bonus tip: Brighten your day (and someone else’s) by picking up fresh blooms from the friendly flower vendors along the street on your way back
A stay here puts you right where the action is—comfort, culture, and a little chaos at night included!
