The B&B isn't terrible. It's old and dingy with dirty grout in the baths. The rooms are small (to be expected), but ok. The location is fabulous, and the city is so cool, but our experience was bad. ||||We went in the off season, so there were no tourists around. What we didn't know was that there were no locals around either and that it was a local holiday of sorts, so the entire town was closed! There wasn't a single restaurant, shop, or bar open for dinner. We arrived just before sunset to discover this. If we had known, we would have eaten dinner in town or packed something for dinner and breakfast from the grocery store prior to making our way up. ||||Someone checked us in and left. They offered to make us a "dinner", which turned out to be some salad greens, bread, and cured meat and cheese with two glasses of wine for 20 Euro. We ended up spending the night in a totally deserted, dark town, kind of hungry. Nobody was at the empty B&B with us, which made the experience very surreal. I didn't mind that, but definitely minded the lack of a hot meal. ||||Breakfast wasn't offered until quite late in the morning (9:30, I think?), so we skipped it and opted to leave at 8 to get a start on our road trip earlier. ||||Holidays can't be helped, but I am very disappointed that the absence of food, services, or staffing was not communicated to us prior to arrival so that we could prepare to make our stay more comfortable beforehand. ||||It was the least expensive lodging we found in the Civita, so maybe it's par for the course. I felt that our experience here was over-priced (because they charged 3-star hotel prices) and was totally underwhelming (with fewer services and amenities than a...
Read moreBefore making our way to Rome for the flight home we stopped at the Orvieto train station, boarded a bus to Bagnoregia and climbed the hill to Civita. This UNESCO World site literally stands apart from any other we have ever visited in Europe, as a mideival town with a population under 10, Civita is as enchanting as they come. While virtually no one we spoke to in our travels had ever heard of this village our anticipation grew as we waited to see if it was as magical as Rick Steeves described it in his Europe Through the Back Door DVD series. The tastefully decorated rooms, kindness of the staff, palate pleasing meals and local wine made the Civita B & B one of our favorites over the 26 day trek. The staff Fiorella, Nina and Giorgia created a wonderful atmosphere and were very attentive to travellers needs providing complimentary wine and water when we arrived and ensuring our stay was perfect...and it was! ||We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Franco, who shared stories about the town, his business, and his long term friendship with Rick Steeves (whose travel advice we have embraced over the past two years). As he often describes the off the beaten path locations as some of the most special we would have to agree that Civita is every bit the peaceful, romantic village it was described to be and with it being so accessible from Rome and Florence it is definitely worth the side trip. Sitting at the bottom of the hill, embracing the silence and solitude while waiting for the sun to come up over top this majestic village is one of the memories I will cherish for...
Read moreWe were in this magical hilltop village for our nieces wedding . Be prepared to climb the steep incline at the end of the bridge to access the village . This is not for anyone who is not in good physical health , but it is so worth it once your up there. We stayed for three nights. The b & b is clean . The rooms are above the small resturant which is open to the public . If you are going to stay here make sure that you book one of the two rooms which has an ensuite bathroom . The third room has no ensuite and you have to use the bathroom that diners would come to use . Which I feel is not ideal . Having said that the staff were lovely and so helpful . A special thank you to Nina and her two co workers . They made us very welcome and looked after us . Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Franco who was away on a family emergency . This is real rustic Italy and I am so glad we stayed up in civitia and enjoyed this delightful hilltop village . We stayed here after being In Rome and en route to Florence. Go and try it , you will not be...
