The hotel was located at the coastal area of Beppu right next to Beppu Tower. There were some restruants and convenient stores nearby. There were at least 2 shopping malls within walking distant.||||The hotel was facing the Beppu Bay. Make sure you book a seaview room to enjoy the great view. They had two hot spring facilities. One located on the roof floor (outdoor) opening till mid-night and the other one located on the 2nd floor (indoor) operating 24 hours. The hot-springs were separated into male and female areas.||||I stayed in a seaview Japanese style room which was very big. The room was clean, however full of cigarette smell when I first entered the room. They provided me with a air filter machine to remove the smell and became fresh after an hour.||||The hotel provided different eating options. Breakfast only or breakfast plus dinner. For dinner there were many choices including seafood, shabu shabu, beef, sashimi or sets with all of the above. You can choose to eat in the restruant or inside your room. I strongly recommend to enjoy your meal inside the room which provide a different feeling although they charged a little bit higher for this arrangement.||||After dinner, they will come to clean up the room and prepared the tatami sleeping.||||I met 2 ladies, one at the reception and one serving us dinner, both can speak very good English. Others English were quite basic.||||Some hints for booking on their web-site. The booking options on their English site were lot less than their Japanese site. They always provided discount options which only shown on the Japanese site. I used "Google translate" to find a much cheaper package and booked directly from the Japanese site by copying the Japanese package name onto the...

Read moreI rated this Ryokan 2 stars just because the lobster dinner was worthy of the extra I paid. Everything else was wrong and I was very annoyed that they treated Japanese and foreign guests very differently.
I did not feel much hospitality at check in time as all we got was a briefing at the front desk then being walked to the room and handed the key, without a mini tour of the room like what our Japanese neighbor got.
The room we got had a nice seaview but it has a dated feel, just like the indoor onsen which is in the same building. The rooftop outdoor onsen was nicer but it was far too tiny, and its dressing room was merely a narrow corridor.
We had our dinner in our room. The food was great and nicely presented. But the problem was we did not get a menu and that was something that never happened in my numerous stays in Ryokans.
We absolutely hated staying in Bokai but tried to convince ourself it was not too bad because the food was good at least. It was not exactly right!. The breakfast felt cheap as it was done in a banquet hall with platic table cloth, which was not something I expected at an elegant hotel spring hotel. The quality was so bad that even the staple item, rice, was browned and nasty so we ended up leaving most of the sides unconsumed.
At checkout time, we once again experienced the inconsistency of the service. The man who checked out at the same time with us got a valet service and had his car driven to the front door while we only got our key back and a "thank you, goodbye" at the front desk. The girl even handed me the wrong car key!
It was my worst hotel stay experience in Japan ever and I hope this review can help you...
