Pros:||- AMAZING views of the ocean-- you are literally perched right over it.||- WONDERFUL kind family that runs the hotel and goes out of their way to make sure you have a great experience. (We were waiting for the bus and one of the workers saw us as he drove by, and turned around to pick us up and drive us to town, just to be nice.) ||- Really beautiful, high-end onsen baths, easy to reserve, very private, clean, and enjoyable (no additional cost)||- Very nice full breakfast served each day, with a range of sides-- something for everyone-- and great pancakes.||- Fun mini pool table and nice living room for hanging out||- Easy walk over to Shirahama beach, which is an amazing, beautiful sandy beach with great waves for surfing or boogie boarding. Also, right by Shirahama beach is a 7-11 and a few little restaurants and a surf shop where you can rent things, so that was helpful. ||||Cons:||- We had chosen this hotel because of the pool, because our kids prefer the pool to the beach, but during our stay the pool was drained and being redone. (Not their fault, but a bummer they were doing this in July.)||- We had also chosen this hotel because of the on-site chef that people really seemed to enjoy, but he was on vacation during our stay. ||- The rooms could use a little fresh paint and general freshening up. (The rooms are clean, tho.)||- It's a long walk to town and the bus doesn't come...

Garden Villa Shirahama in Shimoda, Japan, is a serene retreat that offers a perfect balance of relaxation and nature. Tucked away in a lush hillside with stunning views of Shirahama Beach, this boutique hotel provides an intimate and peaceful escape for travelers seeking tranquility.||||The villa-style accommodations are cozy and well-appointed, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comforts. We stayed at Gardenvilla Shirahama for 2 nights and it was overall a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. The property is easy to reach by bus or private car from Izukyu-Shimoda station, and the owners can arrange transportation to and from the station as well. The property is in a scenic location, conveniently just a few minutes walk away from Shirahama beach. Our room was a "non view" one, and although it was a little "old fashioned" and the bathroom was just a business hotel type, everything was clean and functional. You're not supposed to spend too much time in your room anyway, with so much gorgeous nature and perfect beaches outside! The open baths were both very nice, with a gorgeous scenic view. There's a small but nice swimming pool that is ideal for kids. The breakfast/restaurant ares serves also as relaxing area with free drinks 24/24. The breakfast was very satisfying, all ingredients were fresh and well cooked...the small but excellent pancakes were definitely the highlight. There are a few other restaurants in the area but we only tried the BBQ at the property restaurant, which was nothing to write home about but it was ok. The owners are lovely people and really make an excellent job in helping guests relax and enjoy their holidays....

I am an avid traveler and have never left a review for a hotel before - however this place exceeded my expectations in every way that I need to tell the world how amazing this place is. My friend and I stayed here as a little break to rejuvenate between busy cities in Japan. The hotel is family owned and every person we encountered was so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. They truly wanted our stay to be as comfortable as it could be. The hotel itself is perched up high with the most amazing view of the sea below. The pool area is the perfect little oasis, and the private onsens were shockingly nice and easy to book. The inside of the hotel is incredibly cozy, warm, and welcoming, with delicious smells wafting from the kitchen. The hotel provides breakfast each day and we were never disappointed. They were some of the best breakfasts of the entire trip. On our last day we left for the train station and I had forgotten my shampoo/conditioner bottles. about 15 minutes later One of the hotel staff showed up to the station to bring them to me. I can not say enough good things about this hotel. I can not wait to return for another vacation with my husband and kids. Thank you Gardenvilla!

Stayed here for two nights with friends and I'm already waiting to come back. The owners are warm and friendly and extremely helpful, the property is beautiful and the ocean is just a few minutes down the road. The views are picturesque, and I would recommend the sea-view rooms (because they're just breathtaking!). The indoor area is also homely and the dining space is good for groups if you want to play a quiet game or have hot drinks from the hot drinks bar. We booked breakfast with our rooms, and enjoyed it- the food was incredible- simple, fresh and healthy. If you need to have lunch, book in advance as they have to plan and prepare it, same with dinner. There's also a BEAUTIFUL BBQ area and if you book in advance, this is a great option to enjoy the lovely outdoor setting. The outdoor baths are also a must-do and both the lower and upper baths overlook the ocean, so don't miss those! There are not as many restaurants around the place, particularly if you are not travelling by car, so plan your meals ahead by letting the hotel know. In short, this is a beautiful place to come to and switch off, and you'll want to return multiple times!

Gardenvilla Shirahama is one of the best places, if not the best place, I've stayed at in Japan. I would highly recommend this place to travelers interested in visiting Shirahama Beach, as it is only about an 8 minute walk away. All of the staff are incredibly nice and helpful and one member is even fluent in English, although she wasn't always around. I would advise knowing some basic Japanese if you do stay at this hotel. It offers both Western style and traditional Ryokan style rooms and, as of June 2018, a new building for more rooms was under construction. The outdoor bath is amazing and offers a sense of privacy that others do not by allowing guests to reserve certain time slots during which strangers will not enter. I highly recommend getting breakfast included. There are three courses to get you started for the day: first is soup with some bread, then a salad and eggs with meat and yogurt, then finally pancakes to finish up. Every morning if different, so the meals never get boring and everything is delicious. The kitchen uses fresh, locally sourced produce as well!
